Somebody tell me how I was supposed to play this. I just can't see laying down the nut flush on hand #1.

Fold AJo to the preflop raise when you're out of position? Or if you're going to call the raise, bet at the flop to see where you are? Chances are good he'd have raised with his set, giving you a chance to lay down your hand before you fell in love with it.

I would never call that raise with AJ off preflop. Once there, I MIGHT consider calling his reraise of my river bet, but I wouldn't get all my money in with the board paired. You could very well be up against a very big hand value betting you. Which in this case, you were.

Nonetheless, tough hand.

I think AQ in EP has been discussed many times here, with the conclusion that it is a fold. So AJ in the button after a raise.... /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

So you mean the guy is blind? He doesn't see that there are 4 diamonds on the board?
And when he reraises you, you still mean he hasn't seen the flush? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Even more than this is that there is no way he is going to CALL your big raise with less than a full house. If you're going to make a raise on the river in this situation make one that a worse hand is likely to call.

On the river, I don't mind your bet, and assuming he might be a bit on the dim side, calling his raise is okay, but making a huge reraise is a big mistake. Everyone can see the four diamonds. Is he really going to call you with the Qd? Probably not. He is certainly going to call with a full house or four of a kind, though. So your raise gains nothing when you're ahead and loses everything when you're behind.

That's the big mistake on this hand. All your other plays are close or debatable I think. Me, I fold preflop.
