FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 16 , 2004

BoDog.com Sportsbook and Casino™ (http://www.bodog.com/welcome/81165.html) has released odds on who will win the upcoming World Series of Poker.

With the poker craze hitting mainstream over recent years, you can now wager on who will be the true guru of poker this year.

“Last year Chris Moneymaker proved that anyone can win the World Series of Poker and there could be a new shocker this year,” said Rob Gillespie, President of BoDog.com Sportsbook and Casino (http://www.bodog.com/welcome/81165.html). “With so many great poker players in the world, it would be impossible to include them all. We feel we’ve compiled a list that gives our players the best chance to wager on a winner.”

Phil Ivey, considered by many as the best No Limit player in the world, is coming out strong. Currently Ivey is listed as the odds on favorite to win the 2004 World Series of Poker, at 12/1 odds. Howard “The Professor” Lederer is very close behind Ivey at 14/1 odds, with Scotty Nguyen at 15/1. It’s no big secret that Phil Hellmuth is an excellent poker player, and certainly one they love to hate. You can’t ignore his track record, which currently has him listed at 16/1 odds. 2000 Champion Chris “Jesus” Ferguson is certainly a man on a mission and would like nothing better than to reclaim his crown as World Series Champion. Ferguson is running at 22/1 odds. The surprise of last season, Chris Moneymaker may make his return to sweep the final table, with odds listed at 30/1.

Men “The Master” Nguyen will be bringing his chatty upbeat play to the table, with his odds set at 45/1. One half of the Shulman’s, Barry is listed at 60/1 odds, with Jeff a little further down the line at 90/1. Even though Ben Affleck has hired himself a poker coach, Affleck is still the extreme long shot to take the World Series of Poker. Affleck odds are listed at 1000/1.

“Phil Ivey has certainly been making some powerful moves and remains to be the man to beat” said Gillespie. “We will be updating our odds to reflect the final table, once those players are determined.”

There is a very big range in odds between the favourites and the non-favourites. I believe that the element of luck of poker is too big enough that such disparity of odds should not occur.

in other words, instead of the odds being in the range of 14/1 to 1000/1, shouldn't the odds be more like 600/1 to 1000/1 to reflect the greater role on luck in tournament poker?

I could be completely wrong here so if anybody could shed some light on this matter, it would be great.

The article didn't mention it, but there are only 50 players listed (49 plus Affleck), and the field.

THE FIELD IS EVEN MONEY!

Last month, I advocated laying heavy odds on the field against about 200 players offered at a different site.

Even money? Are you kidding? BRING YOUR MOTHER'S CHECKBOOK.

(Too bad BoDog has a $50 limit on this bet. No fooling.)

If you had to set odds on players to win the WSOP, who would you set as the favorite? Personally, I think there's about a half-dozen players that should all be rated favorites and Ivey isn't in that list. But, you have to pick a favorite, so who is it?

I mean to be honest as well as anyone, I haven't seen everyone play, what do I see, I see as much as anyone else I see what is on television. I just don't see how Phil Ivey could be ranked as high as he his as well as Howard Lederer and then T.J. Cloutier be ranked that low at 60 to 1.

I'm wondering if they have money lines on these players, because I would bet against some players from winning the entire thing.

Ivey is and should be heading any favorites list. He's proven himself to be the top player in the world IMO. And his tournament results are very good as well.

I hope you're only talking in relative terms here. With the expected 1000-1500 players this year, there's nobody in the world even CLOSE to 60:1. I wouldn't bet anybody at less than 300:1, and that's with not much more than 1000 players. With 1500, 400:1 is as low as you should go.

What a joke. At 12:1, I wouldn't bet on all of them put together. In fact, if you let me pick any 20 players from the entire field and bet on any one of them winning, I wouldn't touch that bet at 12:1.

If this clown is getting customers for these bets, then it just goes to show the old saying about a sucker every minute is true.

Dutch Boyd at 20/1? That's just hilarious.

I notice Carlos Mortenson is at 90-1. Might be some value there? I like the field at even money.

Only if he can see through the cards.

No one in the world has even remotely close to a 1/91 chance to win a 1500 player poker tournament.

Of course, that is why I want to be against some of these guys.

As has been said, nobody is a good bet at 90:1 here. However, unless they've names at least 300 players, then the field at even money is an excellent bet. And it's probably not a bad bet until they name at least 500 players outside the field.

Of course, to be a good bet, you have to get paid. Is this even a reputable site? I'd love to know, because I'd be happy to bet the field at even money against a small group of named players.

how does ben affleck have the same odds (or worse in the case of ben v. brunson) as these world class players?

clearly all of the bets are sucker bets....but can i place some last longer bets on ben vs. these guys?

Mano

I would guess the lines are set by the bets placed on each player, not their actual playing ability (handicapped to begin with and then the line moves according to the action). Probably lots of Ben and JLo fans wagering.
