View Full Version : Question about Hourly Rate - Theory

I just finished reading Katy Lederer's book. I realize that it is not a "poker book", but it left me with a question in my mind.

In her book, Katy explains that if Howard or Annie was able to win 1BB/hour, s/he was having a good day. I also read somewhere else (I don't remember where), that an excellent hold 'em player could win between 2 and 2.5/BB hour.

Now, in general, one can expect to play about 1.5 to 2 times as many hands at an internet than at a B&M table.

So, does this mean that an excellent internet hold 'em poker player should win 1.5 to 2 times more BB/hour than a B&M player?

I've not read any books specifically detailing internet poker, so I don't know if the can could be found there.

Thanks,
Rugbyrat

With internet play becoming more and more popular, I think it makes more sense to think in terms of $/hand than BB/hour (like usual, Tommy Angelo had it right a long time ago).

For the sake of comparison, you can assume that most B&M hold'em games deal about 35 hands/Hr. In other words, I agree with Astroglide that 3 BB/100 hands is a pretty good benchmark for a good player.

In the games Annie and Howard play, 1 bb/hr is a good rate. For lower stakes a higher bb/hr is possible.

What amount would be considered a "big bet"?

Girazze,

The "big bet" is the bet amount on the turn and the river in limit holdem. So, for a 30/60 game, one big bet per hour would be $60 per hour.

At what limits is this goal attainable or realistic? At any limits? Obviously it's much harder to do this with multiple tables, and the higher the limits are. If you could accomplish this with 4 tables at 15/30, this would be amazing.

1BB/hr at 4 tables at 15/30 is being accomplished by a few regulars around these forums. not amazing really....just some pretty talented players.

I was referring to the 3 BB/100 hands rather than 1 BB/hr per table. With 4 tables, the former rate (assuming 66 hands/hr per table) is about 8 BB/hr, whereas the latter rate is 4 BB/hr. Either way 4*30 = $120/hr, or 8*30 = $240/hr is pretty great.

Anyone else have any comments about my earlier post?

I don't want to be insulting, so don't that this the wrong way, OK?

There is a huge skill difference between the players that are making 3 bb/100 and a new player. 100,000's of hands I would assume, and careful study of the results and play. Just don't get too excited and jump in over your head.

normally i play about 200-300 hands / hr /images/graemlins/grin.gif, so my play rate is 250H/hr /images/graemlins/laugh.gif...
