View Full Version : Strange Occurences
Was playing in a weekly Hold 'em game last Wednesday, and the following 3 highly improbable hands occured. Anyone care to guess which situation is more of a rarity? Anyone care to do the calculations (after making your guess, of course)? /images/graemlins/grin.gif
1) 10 10 vs A 3 (both all in)...2 deuces flop. Then a
deuce on the turn and a deuce on the river. 4 of a
kind on the board. A 3 wins with four of a kind and an Ace
kicker.
2) I don't remember the specifics on this one...but 3
players, a lot of money in the pot...turns out all
three guys had AQ offsuit. WOW.
3) Hands don't matter on this one...the flop came
5 6 7 the turn was 8 the river was 9
Straight on the board, in order - 5 6 7 8 9.
How bizarre. And all in one 5 hour session of playing. Just thought I'd share.

are you new to poker? if you keep playing often enough things like a 4 card straight on the board and even two players both holding AA will not seem so amazing.
I've seen both of the hands you are speaking of. However, three players with the same hand and a 5 card straight on the board, in order is quite a rarity, I think. Not to mention all in the same night...

I don't think the odds'll be as outlandish as you think.
There's only 13 ranks of cards in a deck, with 4 of each. People seem to forget that there's only those 52 cards in a deck when they start saying such and such sequence was lucky/outrageously rare/unlucky/frikkin' cheatin' mofo's or, my personal favourite...astronomical.
edit: Another way of looking at it: What do you think the odds are of any sequence of cards that you would consider strange occurring during an evening of poker.
If you play a good solid session, then it's going to start getting pretty close to one. It'd be strange if we didn't see such sequences.

You think that's weird. The other day I was playing and on my first orbit I was dealt the following 10 hands in order:
5 /images/graemlins/club.gif2 /images/graemlins/spade.gif
Q /images/graemlins/heart.gif4 /images/graemlins/heart.gif
A /images/graemlins/diamond.gif2 /images/graemlins/spade.gif
7 /images/graemlins/spade.gif7 /images/graemlins/heart.gif
T /images/graemlins/club.gif2 /images/graemlins/club.gif
6 /images/graemlins/heart.gif4 /images/graemlins/spade.gif
7 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif3 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif
K /images/graemlins/heart.gifJ /images/graemlins/spade.gif
9 /images/graemlins/heart.gif7 /images/graemlins/heart.gif
Q /images/graemlins/club.gif9 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif
The probability of that happening is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000595 .

I saw this a couple of days ago:
Flop was J J J
Turn was J
River was inconsequential
Two players at showdown:
Player 1: A A
Player 2: A A
I've played my fair share of poker, but that's about the weirdest hand I've seen so far.
