Harrahs and Binions Horseshoe announced a new, flatter payout structure for the 2004 World Series of Poker main event. The $10,000 No Limit Hold Em tournament event has gotten so popular, that they have decided to let everyone return home a winner.
"It just seemed that with the big poker boom, Binions and Harrahs is poised to send everyone home happy," said Jack Binion. "It's no secret to us in the casino industry. The more people that win means more people gambling after the tournament at the poker tables."
The new payout structure is much flatter than in previous years. The payout structure will reward more players, but the payouts for the top finishers will be considerably less than last year's $2.5 million taken home by accountant and compulsive gambler Chris Moneymaker. The last place finisher of the estimated 1000+ participants will win $10,000 in prize money. This structure stays flat until the final table, where each of the 10 final table participants will take home $10,000. As always, the final 2 players will be playing for a WSOP bracelet and top prize of $10,000. Added prizes for the final this year are Phil Hellmuth's pacifier, Howard Lederer's emotions (unused) and a copy of the Shana Hiatt edition of Playboy.
Moneymaker remarked that this year's payout structure would be much improved since "I don't have a snowball's chance in hell at winning this thing a 2nd time."
