Does anyone know where I can find a guide to playing the first two cards? (Having trouble understanding the one in HEFAP) Thanks.

I don't find Abdul's pre-flop guide to be all that opaque. Go back and read the General Concepts opening section. You don't think that might be helpful to a new player? It was for me.

most of it refers to "opening", and most of his opens suggest raises. furthermore there's seriously dubious spelled-out advice like raising loose limpers from the button with A9o and calling with A8o.

I'm with astroglide here. While Abdul is a great poker thinker, if the poster if having trouble with HPFAP, he's really going to have trouble following Abdul here.

Lee Jones writes and presents his materials in understandable words and formats and is a great start for a player who feels he needs pre-flop advice.
