300 players left...130 get paid...average stack is 20k
blinds: 500/1000

Hero has 15k and is UTG+1 with QQ

UTG limps, Hero raises to 5k (good amount?) everyone folds to UTG who flat calls...

Flop: A 5 9 (rainbow)
UTG checks, Hero????

Results: I pushed in and UTG thinks about 20secs then calls, he has A2o and "byebye Hero", out 294

If you were going to raise 1/3 of your stack, I think you need to push all-in preflop. On that flop, I think you need to check and call, all-in if necessary). Pushing in will just get you called by an ace or make worse hands fold; by checking you may induce a bluff.

UTG's play sure looks like a small/medium pair. If it was 55 or 99, well, you're in trouble. Most players won't play an ace like that though

'course this *is* a $1 buy in tournament...

you think it is correct to check the flop through? it is just me and UTG, he checked to me...

I would probably have raised to 3k and then checked when the A came. Basically, if an A comes on the flop here, I assume i'm beaten. I played in that last night and busted out in 150th place when i pushed all in with an overpair. The other guy got a runner runner straight to beat me.

What stack does UTG have? Is he likely to make a loose call ?

I think I push preflop.

My thinking is you are either way ahead (to any other pair) or way behind (to an ace). The only better hand you *might* make fold by betting is KK. If you bet, worse hands will fold, and better hands will call. If you check, worse hands may bet.

If you want to check and fold to any significant bet, that would be OK, but I think it is a bit weak for this stage of the tournament.
