I am having a tournament and I have a question. If I am the dealer and I knock out the person to my left (the small blind) who is the next dealer? And what happens to the blinds? Thanks for the help.

The button moves along and you are in the cutoff, blinds proceed as normal relative to button (BB from last hand saves himself a SB and gets the button).

Most tournaments use a "dead button". This means you would be dealer again.

ehn. Online tournaments I've played in always move the button. Maybe a difference between live v. online tourneys, not sure that it much matters in a home tourney anyway.

Agree with pudley.

In a live tourney you will never get a free SB. Either a dead button or I have also seen where in this case the BB would post a SB on the button and the next two players would post a BB. The following round there would be 2 SB and 1 BB. After that things get back to normal.

The dead button is easier!

The most important thing it to keep the blinds in order. The dead button is by far the easiest way to do this. If the small blind gets knocked out, the button "moves" to his seat (you would still have the button position), the BB posts the SB and UTG posts the BB, just like they would have had SB still been in. (Pretend he's still sitting there for puposed of blinds.)

If the BB busts out, UTG posts the big and there's no SB for that round. IF UTG busts out, BB posts the SB and UTG +1 posts the BB. You always have a BB and everybody posts their fair share of blinds.

Casinos have a way to avoid the dead button (in a ring game) and still keep the blinds fair, but it is a pain to figure out. A previous response details this, but during a game you'll spend 20 minutes telling everyone what's going on.

This is called a forward-moving button. It's normally used in ring games.
