I think he played it fine.

Incidentally, does anyone know the odds of AKo v 22 headsup? My rough calculation tells me it's about even money. Guess I should pick up one of those poker stat books. Which brings up another question, what's a good poker stat book?

won't give you the AKo vs 22 figure you're looking for. However, it will tell you how any hand will fare in a heads-up match against a random hand.

The best source for Hold'em statistics is definitely Hold'em's Odds Book by Mike Petriv

Here are some statistics from the book:

Two unsuited cards such as AKo will flop a pair 29% of the time (at least a pair 32% of the time not including straights).

If you don't make at least one pair on the flop, you will make at least one pair by the river 24% of the time.

Doing some rudimentary math, you should make at least one pair a little more than 48% of the time.

However, this doesn't consider the possiblilty that 22 will flop a set. This confirms what I have seen written that AKo is a slight underdog to any pair in a heads-up match-up.

Thanks for the info.

What's interesting about that table in the link you gave is that it shows 22 is a 49.4% winner against a random hand. That suggests that if you're holding 22 heads-up you'd rather be up against AKo than against a random hand, if I'm reading things right.

That's very logical.

As far as 22 is concerned, AKo and 83o aren't much different. 22 is a pair going up against two overcards. The only difference is the straight possibility of AK (using both cards).

22 loses more often against the random hand because those random hands include bigger pairs and suited cards which can also make flushes as well as bigger pairs.

Zbigniew's plug of Hold'em Showdown software is well warranted.

Written by Steve Brecher, a pretty damned good player, and obviously smart guy. I use it all the time. It's outstanding.
