I heard discussion about it and I think have even seen an article, but can't find anything about it.

My help make quite good and after inquiring usually "the help" make dependant on their skill. So a strong bell hop may make 2 figures an hour while a weak one only makes 1.

The building in your image looks more like an all-girls school then a castle.

Ahhh you jest with me. I never said that the picture contained my castle though this is one of my holdings. As far as owning an all-girls school....well there are worse things I could think of. Perhaps you would like to visit one day?

if a person is smart enough to use a computer he is smart enough to make decent money so why on earth would he want to open doors and haul bags for tourists tips.

Looks like Steven Punk isn't the only member of the ruling class around here. Someone's gotta clean the shitters and whatnot.

I'm not looking to open doors and haul bags for tourist tips (yet), but a while ago I had heard the tips at some of the better strip jobs can add up to the upper 5 figures and higher. A lawyer friend of mine is temporarily working the door at an upscale resort that a buddy of his manages, so I had a flashback and hoped to confirm/expand on my memory of the strip jobs.

i dont know about doormen but i was making 35K+ as a server in a really decent steak house here in dallas while going to school. this was 10 years ago. i never have understood why people would work for min wage when waiting tables pays so much better. even when i first started serving at the Olive Garden i made $400+ a week bring home. that was 14 years ago. then i got promoted to bartender and made 6.00
an hour+ tips which equalled 6-700 dollars a week cash. I have a really good friend that works at one of the top notch steak houses in dallas and he makes over 1k a week easily.

I just read one of those, what people make articles in the paper about a week ago. One person was a bell hop in Vegas, it didn't say what casino, but he claimed he made 65K a year. I also have heard from some Vegas people last time I was there that Valet parkers make even more. If you could land a job at one of the big hotel and casino's it is possible you could make over 100k/year parking cars.

We'd all be doing ~40% better if we could evade taxes (fed & state withholding, SS, Medicare) as easily as tip-based employees.

"Smare enough to use a computer"??? You must use a PC! /images/graemlins/smile.gif You don't need to be as smart to use a Mac.

Seriously and sadly, though, I have to disagree with your premise. The unemployment rate in Silicon Valley attests that being smart enough to use a computer and $2.30 gets you a tall latte at Starbucks. It's getting better, fortunately, but very slowly and mainly for those well ahead on the "smart" curve.
