What are some of those contestants thinking? The ones I'm amazed at are the ones who sing a "reach" song in this current round. they don't sing a song that they know they'll nail, but instead sing a song that is outside of their normal or best style.
For those who don't know the format, the one hundred some odd contestants that "went to Hollywood" were cut down to four groups of 8. One group of 8 sang each of the past four weeks, and the top two vote getters each week went through to the finals.
The finals start in a couple of weeks (final 12 after the addition of four wild cards) at which point only one person a week is eliminated.
given this format, why would you go outside of your forte this of all weeks? This is when you have to sound your best, since only two out of eight get passed on through. In the finals round (if you make it that far), you can sing a song that isn't your best effort and still have a chance to get through. Someone may sing worse, you may get votes based on potential, or some crazed chick or dude may like your look and vote for you on a speed dialer. This week, though, you have to bring your A game.
