Tournament Payouts

Me and a friend were just curious about how they payout the big tournaments. I know that most of the time you get cash but what about the $100k plus wins that all of the big tournaments produce. Do they give it to you all in cash or will the casino write you a check for most of it? Also if you did win one of these what would you do with the cash right away?
