Legal Ramifications of owning/Operating an illegal room

This post is for any lawyers out there or NYC folk who may know the legal ramifications for owning and operating an illegal room. I have heard that the penalties aren't very severe for first time offenses. This is all very hypothetical of course. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I play at a few clubs here in NYC. I also have a friend in the DA's office. He tells me that they look the other way for the most part. The only games they care about are the huge stakes games that go on in Chinatown where 10K+ changes hands on a regular basis.

One of the clubs was apparently busted a few years ago. The police knocked and said they had a warrant. Everyone quickly cashed out and then the police came in, cited the place and all the players were allowed to go. The place moved to a new location soon afterward.

I would imagine that if you keep the stakes below $40-$80 or so no one will care.
