View Full Version : Is this rake beatable?

4-8 hold 'em, $3 flat rake per hand, plus $1 flat jackpot drop per hand. In other words, 1/2 a big bet out of every single hand!!

I ran Turbo simulation with those parameters. After 100,000 hands, only one player up ($6,500) and two down over $100K.

I don't play much in casinos, but this does not seem like a good game!

thats a vicious rake i agree

but after 100,000 hands any rake will take a noticeable affect.

Whe you ran the simulation did you make all the players equal skill level? If all the players are equal, then the rake will eat them up eventually. Your advantage in poker is when you are better that your opponents, if they call with hands you would fold, etc. The worse they play, the more the better players will get from them. Also, keep in mind that in Vegas, they rake $3 from the pot in even a 3-6 game if the pot is big enough.

Canterbury in Minneapolis takes out $4 + $1 for jackpot out of every pot. Even at 2-4. they're raping you hard:)

Sheck

The players were of varied skill levels (I used one of the preset Turbo line-ups). What I thought remarkable was that only one of 10 players ended up ahead. I always figured I just had to be a little better than average to end up ahead. This example meant only the best player ended up ahead.

Another way of interpreting the rake is that it eats the small blind. So, assuming a 10-handed table and 30 hands per hour, I am small blind 3 times, and lose 3 times 1/2 a big bet, or 1-1/2 big bets per hour! That's a lot of overhead to lose!

It seems like a typical rake. It should be no problem to beat it.

DYNASTY,

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BEATING A GAME? WHO ARE YOU TO GIVE ADVICE ON BEATING ANYTHING? WHAT GAMES DO YOU PLAY BESIDES 1-5 STUD? DO YOU KNOW HOW OUTRAGEOUS THAT RAKE IS? ON TOP OF THAT A JACKPOT DROP. ANY TRUE POKER PLAYER THAT CAN MAKE A DECENT HOURLY RATE WILL NOT PLAY ON A JACKPOT DROP GAME. THEN AGAIN, YOU'RE PROBABLY NOT A DECENT HOURLY RATE PLAYER. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR BOGUS INFO FROM ANYWAY? THE NEXT THING YOU'LL SAY IS THAT YOU MAKE $50 AN HOUR PLAYING 1-5 STUD, RIGHT? PLEASE RE-EVALUATE WHAT YOU SAY ON THIS FORUM. IT'S NOT A BEATABLE GAME. PERIOD.

OK buddy, we hear you - no need to shout.

It's beatable, but optimum conditions must be present, i.e. some loose-passive players at the table or other exploitable weaknesses. I'd much rather play weak players than a light rake and good players. One poor player will contribute much more to the table than the extra couple of dollars this rake claims.

As for nasty rakes, many of the private games in Dallas drop $5 per pot, even at the 3-6 level. Lunacy, but there are quite a few softies sitting so it's not as bad as it sounds.

are apparently afraid that we won't be able to tell from the content of the post alone that they are idiots. And they are wrong.

I hope so, otherwise my $4-8 with a $5 rake plus $1 jack drop is gotta be real tough /images/smile.gif

My 4-8 drops 5+1 also. But reguardless of the simulations, it is beatable; at least at the loose Cali games I play in. Theres usually at least one sucker an hour that just throws a rack away. I'd hate to see the profits from a few of you players from Vegas if you played around L.A. or San Diego. With that wicked drop, I'm averaging, (lemme check the spreadsheet) 3.6 BB/H over the last 6 months. You guys would probably eat this game alive.
