I unwittingly sat at an Ultimate 2/4 and they said it was a "Kill" game. Didn't seem very different from the regular game I'm used to. Something about winning back to back or something... but not quite sure...

I asked this question earlier....

Its a game where the stakes change due to some circumstances in the game. For instance, if someone were to win two pots in a row, the stakes are doubled.

I'll let others expound /images/graemlins/smile.gif

In a kill game, the stakes double after a player wins 2 consecutive pots. So, 3/6 becomes 6/12, etc. In some card rooms, the 2nd pot must meet some minimum size; in others, one simply wins 2 consecutive pots. The winner of the 2 pots then posts a "kill" blind at the higher stakes. (Ex. in a 3/6 game the "killer" would post a $6 blind bet.) Things proceed normally from there at the higher stakes.

There are also "half kill" games. In 3/6 the stakes would change to 4/8.

The above post is an accurate definition.

On UB, both pots won consecutively must be big enough (I think it's 5 small bets) to qualify for a kill.

When I was in Reno, thier kill game only required the second consecutive pot to be of a certain size.

If the concept of playing for double stakes on some hands will bother you, don't sit in a kill game - it can really make you play scared if you happen to get a playable hand when the kill is on. You can get some really big pots because the maniacs will comeout of their shoes when the kill button is on, but if the extra action makes you nervous, just stay away from the kill games.

I love "kill" games!
They're spread in a nearby Washington casino.

When I first started playing though, it scared me and I prayed for 72o... now I want a hand.

One other thing I forgot to add. In some kill games the kill blind is "live" and closes the action pre-flop. Whereas in others, the kill blind acts in turn and can either check, call or raise.

Let me see if I understand.

I'm in a 2/4 game. I'm not in the blinds yet and I win my second consecutive pot. On the next hand, I need to put up 4 for killer blind? And the blinds put up 2 and 4 and the game plays as if it were 4/8?

What if I win my second consecutive pot and it's my turn to put up the small blind? Do I put up 6? And the Big Blind puts up 4?

Not quite...

Standard kill works like this:

2/4 kill game. you win two pots of a certain size in a row (at UB I think they need to be 5BBs). the small blind is still $1. The big blind is still $2. You have to post an additional kill blind of $4. The game now plays 4/8.

There are places that do kill differently, where there's a kill blind anytime you win a pot that's over some dollar value, or what not, but basically the gist of it is that the small and big blind stay the same, there's a new "kill" blind, and the game plays at double the stakes.

Kill games are good things.

Also, if you win consecutive kill pots, the stakes do not keep raising. They just continue to be 4/8 (in 2/4 kill game) until you don't win a pot. Then the game returns to the 2/4 format until the next kill pot.

Hope you got your questions answered in the responses. I've played kill games in several different card rooms and all of them have slightly different rules for how it works. In a B&M card room, just ask the dealer for the specifics. On-line, I imagine you can get the specifics in the game rules area.

One other thing is that you'll want to make some minor strategy adjustments. Joe Tall has some good advice in this post: Repost from an old Kill-game question #517726
