In the Card Player edition featuring Steve Lipscomb (creator of the World Poker Tour), Steve states that he doesn't allow players at a final table to chop the prize money. How can he do that? Does he own the rights to all the tournaments WPT covers?

For instance, Commerce Casino's L.A. Poker Classic championship event is no longer titled "L.A. Poker Classic No Limit Hold'em Championship," but simply as the "WPT Invitational." Up until now I thought the WPT merely covers championship events that casinos showcase, and then at the end of the season hold a special WPT Tournament of Champions event ($25K buy-in) where the winners of each event is automatically entered. Because the winners were given/awarded the $25k buy-in, it would seem fair to impose a no-dealmaking policy in this ONE event, but not just for any event they choose to cover.

In all honesty, the last thing I, or anyone else, watching poker on TV wants to see is the prize money being chopped before the tournement is over. I don't even chop live, unless I get offered a very good deal that I can't refuse.

WPT probably wouldn't cover the tournament if they allowed deal making, and thus it's a no-brainer for the casinos wanting TV coverage to not allow deal making.

There's no doubt it's not good for TV. But they could edit that out, and have them play it out anyhow for the seat at the championship event?

I don't believe it's their jurisdiction to say no chopping, but i dont think anyone wants to chop on tv. and there is no debate cutting a tournament short and splitting the prize is bad for TV.

This doesn't belong in the "one-table tournament" forum. There's been lots of discussion of this on both 2+2 and rgp.

To search for the relevant 2+2 threads, use the keywords "WPT" and "deal", and select "OR".
