I don't know if he's really 24, or 34, but I'm glad we locked this cat up for 7 years. $100 mil seems fair, especially since I'm sure its heavily backloaded.

7 years? why? every player hits their prime at 27. Which is why Soriano is on the decline.

And I had no idea that Soriano is the same age as A-Rod.

"every player hits their prime at 27"

Some guy named Bonds might disagree with you.

I'm not sure of your point, even if it was correct (which it isn't). Is your point that they should have just gone to arbitration with him for the next 3 years and then lose him since by then he'll be "27" and over the hill?

I think his point was just that generally, players experience their best seasons when they are between 27 and 29 years of age. It's been shown in a number of ballplayers to be true. This of course doesn't mean he won't put up big numbers after 29, but there's a good chance that his years before 30 will be a lot better than after 30. And c'mon Clarky, you know Bonds is as huge an anomaly as you can get. But even taking Bonds as an example, before he went bonkers in 2001, his best year (OPS-wise) was.... when he was 29.

What a country.

I think you are adding way way more than what he was trying to say. Besides, the contract goes til he is 30. Hardly an old man.

Cool. I'm tentatively arriving next Thurs about 10pm and leaving sometime on Sunday. Dynasty and Majorkong should be in tow. There's still like a 10% chance its a no-go, but its looking firmer by the day.

Yes.... assuming he really is 24. Call me a cynic, but a 23 year old hitting .359 with 40+ homers and 120+ rbi's makes me a tad suspicious...

There's nothing like finding out what you're doing on the weekend by reading about it on a public forum.

I'm not sure age is the problem, but more the length of the contract. How many times do contracts of this length end up making eveyone happy?

I'd guess that he'll either be traded or the deal reworked by the 5th year.

LOL. That is mostly what I was trying to say. My friends and i were discussing the 27 thing earlier that day, and we started exaggerating to say that A-rod, Soriano, and Pujols will soon have their best years behind them. I think the 27 thing is the average, the great players (of which all three are/will be a part of) won't fall off.

If the cards make it to the WS, i hope we have another forged birth certificate on our hands (LLWS 2-3 years ago?). Great example for how kids look up to athletes as role models.

I think this will be the first contract of this modern day size to make it the distance, if not falling unbelievably close.

How do you feel about when he was '21' and had a .329 batting average, 37 home runs and 130 RBI's. I think the Cardinal's should have waited to sign him. Why 'buy the cow for seven years when you can rent him at no risk year by year'? The Cardinals were just trying to save face for trading and letting all of the veterans leave.
