I finally caught some of the early action of the 2003 WSOP on ESPN tonight. Hellmuth made such a fool of himself...between the poor sportsmanship at the table and the cheesy clips of him meditating...I nearly threw my shoe at the television.

Someone please help me...who was the crusty old guy that kept busting Hellmuth's chops on the second day? That guy was a riot. Also...please help on the exact quote that got the floor laughing...something about Hellmuth being a bonehead that catches cards. What was it? God I love poker on tv!

the guy hassling hellmuth was Sam Grizzle

That was the first time I had seen that episode as well. I couldn't stop laughing at Grizzle's table chatter /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Grizzle: Phil, you and I make a helluva heads up match....., you've played every pot I've raised.

Hellmuth: When you're a world champion that's the way it is...

Grizzle: What if you're just a goofball that catches cards??

WHOLE PLACE STARTS LAUGHING!!

Grizzle: They're laughing in the back room, ha ha, they heard that in the back room.

Didnt Phil knock him out a few hands later??

Or am I thinking of something else?

There seems to be way less of this kind of stuff in the WPT shows, which makes them less interesting I think.
I have only seen a couple episodes so far though.

The Tournament at the Sands show was very good for player - player entertaining conversation too.

Yeah, I have to say that Helmuth's lack of sportsmanship was distressing. I was disappointed in him. Being a Professional means MUCH more than being good at what you do.

To me, what made ESPN's WSOP coverage interesting was that we got to see a lot of early and middle stage action. The WPT events focus almost entirely on the final table action.

I agree that I would love to see more early and middle round action in WPT events, but I am pretty sure the costs are prohibitive of this. The WPT put on around a dozen tournaments, while the WSOP was only one tourney. We'll probably have to wait till the poker channel comes out before we get to see more than final tables.

I'd like to see broadcasts of the whole final table, not just the highlights. They could just show the hole cards for the highlights if they don't wanna give too much away, but it would be nice to see who is raising the most pots, what percent of hands are seeing flops, etc.

Is it just me or did Sam Grizzle miss a quite a few obvious bets against Phil in some of their earlier heads up confrontations. It seemed he was just happy to just check and take a smallish pot and talk trash, rather than make any kind of bet on the end and either get a call or trap Phil for a raise. He was funny, but I thought he played pretty bad. Calling an all in with 5-7 suited or whatever was rediculous as well..

Phil rules. He only talks sh*t when people play crap and draw out against him.

ive been saying this for quite some time i hope the tv dudes listen. the great part about poker is that most of the players are lowlifes and HATE each other, this makes good television. wpt tries to clean it up too much.

Isn't people playing crap hands and trying to draw out on him what has made him a millionaire? Think about it.

Phil crys and bertaes when people hit legitimate hands and draw out on him as well.

I played 8 /images/graemlins/club.gif 7 /images/graemlins/club.gif against Phils preflop raise UTG out of the BB and had 2 callers to me. I called, flopped a flush and he berated me when i doubled through him.

(BTW, he open raised 10X the BB with Q3o.)
Served him right.

That's the great thing about online poker, I laughed at his idiotic play and just typed in after the berating, "thx Phil"

I like that one point where that guy was singing the Battle of New Orleans with new lyrics...

"fired out once and Phil just kept a'coming
not as many chips as he had a while before
fired once more and he began a running
on down the Mississippi to the gulf of Mexico"

I also thought the way he left (announcing to the players it had been a pleasure playing with them) was a lot more classier then how Phil would have exited the tourney...

Yeah, I thought Sam Grizzle was hilarious, be funny to see those two at the same table again this year.

sam grizzle,...pure comedy, they do need more player interaction as well, add another dimension to the show especially with the influx of reality tv. anyways, if you look in the archives you will see that sam and phil had squared off once outside a casino, if memory serves, grizzle got a shot off on phil and that was it.

Actually, Phil didn't knock him out. Someone else did. Either way, I hate Phil.

I didn't see any of his behavior but it sounds great!
Who wants to see someone say " very nice hand johnny!"
"Thank you phil, I am sure you will get me next time"
"Thank you johnny that was very sporting of you to say that."
I want to see McEnroe, the WWF. I wanna see a player say what he feels "That it F***in sucks when his overpair gets cracked by an all in call by an underpair.
Of course, if I was actually playing in the event, he would probably annoy me but watching it is another matter for me.

I'm pretty sure Phil did knock Grizzle out with AT vs Grizzle's QT desperation all-in preflop.

However, I believe Grizzle knocked Phil out when they got into a fistfight at the Horseshoe some other time.

Then why is the WPT the most popular show on the Travel Channel. Maybe there aren't as people like you out there that thrive on watching people act like losers.

Have you SEEN most of the other shows on the Travel Channel? /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would like to hear more table chatter, if only to get to know the players a bit better.

When you win, Phil's actions can be deemed as 'colorful'.

My favorite crack by the announcers was something along the lines of 'Phil hates it when he gets beat by an unworthy opponent playing unworthy cards' or something to that affect. I think I am mistaken by with "unworthy". I missed that comment the first times I watched the series.
