I think this play was a good one, but you forgot one very important piece of info about the maniac, is he willing to lay down his cards. I've seen people play with stats like the ones that you described, that will not lay down cards, they want to see you win. If that's the type then you have to wait til you catch just a small piece of the flop, then punish. However, if you've seen the maniac lay down, this is a good one to make a run at.
