NL and ... how much to bet/raise ?

I only did read one book so far, 'winning ...' from lee jones which is not a NL book. So my question is how much should I bet regarding of my hand ?
I read some people saying to bet the same as the size pot when they have a good hand or more etc ... is there a formula about this ? How do you guys know how much you have to bet ?
