View Full Version : Mirage Expanding Poker Room

The Mirage poker room is undergoing a few changes in the next week. Renovations will be starting early Sunday/Monday morning and continue through the week. Work is expected to be completed before next weekend.

Most importantly, the room is expanding into the section which now holds Keno. The extra space will allow the Mirage to put in 7 new poker tables for a total of 31. Given that the waiting lists at both the Mirage and Bellagio have been ridiculously long on the weekends for quite a while, these additional tables should provide some relief.

Also, all the tables in the room are going to be set up with automatic shufflers. At present, only a few tables have these. The shufflers definitely speed up the pace of the game. They also seem to cut down the requests for set-ups and eliminate requests for deck changes (since they're changed every hand).

A Mirage regular told me that management intends to make an effort to reestablish their stud games. In 2001, the Mirage was an excellent room for middle limit stud. They often had two 40-80's, two 20-40's, and two 10-20's. About a year and a half ago, they lost just about all their games to the Bellagio. In the past half year, I don't remember once seeing either a 40-80 or 20-40 game. The 10-20 runs sporadically.

Over the next few days, the Mirage expects to only have 11 tables while renovations are taking place.

Its nice to hear for a change that a poker room is expanding.

Thanks for the info Dyansty. Can't wait to see the changes when I'm down in May.

Hah. Back to the original size. It always bothered me they shrunk the poker room to put in the keno. The room has been cramped since IMO.

The Grand in Tunica begins their expansion project any day now, going from 14 to 22 tables.

Exactly! I forgot when that was done but it was 3-4 years ago I think. I always thought that little bit of keno space was/is a joke really.

Do you know if the 'upper secton' is being expanded or is it going to be a combination of both?, or...?

I saw a sign at the Palms about three days ago announcing an expansion to their poker room. The sign claimed that they will also start spreading 9-18 (please have $3 chips for the occasion, Palms) and small NL games.

The assumption Clarkmeister and I are making is that the Mirage will spread whatever games there is a list for. That could be extra middle-limit games. It could also be extra low-limit games. But, as I said in the initial post, they may be making an effort to get more stud games spread.

I was there the other day. 5 more tables coming. They will start spreading both a 1-2NL game and the 9-18. The 9-18 will supposedly have both $3 chips and a 3 chip 2 chip blind structure.

Wow. Its good to see some sanity in room management. I'm still baffled how 3-6 has a 1-3 structure but 15-30 has 10-15. And 5-10 has 2-5 and 25-50 has 15-25. Just bizarre.

Are they spreading 9-18 as a bid to attract L.A. players?

Not sure, but if what Clark says about the blind structure is true, 9-18 is certainly a better option for that room than 10-20.

Thank God for the $3 chips. Now, if someone can convince every cardroom that spreads 6-12 and 8-16 to start using $2 chips, I won't have to tear my hair out quite as much on every visit (they'd better hurry, I don't have much left!)

The funny thing is that those rooms (Mirage and Bellagio) would easily recoup the cost of the new chips within a year due to increased rake from the faster pace of the game. The 8-16 is particularly painful to play in because of the mixed chips. I'd guess it costs them 4-5 hands per hour.

FWIW, I was at the Palms today and asked about when the $9-18 will start being spread.

I was told March 20th. Maybe the makings of a good 2+2 get-together that day?

Best of Luck

Is Atlantic City the only place that has 2.50 (pink) chips? This allows them to set up a 7.5/15 game with the 2 and 3 blind structure using black jack chips.

They have pink chips at a few casinos in Vegas, notably New York, New York. There's no pink chip poker game, though...

No. Pink chips are used exclusively in San Fransisco.

Yeah, especially at the Bellagio where the lower game is 4-8 and that game could use the $2 chips also, it would really make sense to have $2 chips. When I have played the 8-16 there, it was painfully slow, compared to the 8-16 at Canterbury.

The Palms is on Flamingo maybe a mile west of the Bellagio.

Just so everybody is clear, when *I* am king, all limit poker games will be played with a single denomination chip. If you want to spread $8-16, you must have $2 chips. No $30-60 unless you have $10 chips. That simple.

In fact, for the PokerStars cruise, I decreed that for the live action games. We would spread no game that required mixed denomination chips. It worked great with one little exception. We had $2 and $3 chips, and I wasn't paying attention when they started up the $6-12 game. You guessed it - they were playing it with $3 chips 2-4 structure. And a one-chip $3 SB. Ai-ya, these silly East Coast people.

So I said "No no no - $2 chips for $6-12." And they said "Oh - ok." And the next day I came back and they were using $2 chips for the game. /images/graemlins/smile.gif And a $3 SB with one $2 and one $1 chip. /images/graemlins/confused.gif And players had big stacks of $1 chips and would bet $6 by putting out one $2 chip and four $1 chips. And I said "I think I have a WPT tournament to get set up."

With $2 chips, was the 6-12 game supposed to be a 2chip/3chip blind structure?

Thanks,
Bob T.

In every place in California I've been, they played 6-12 with a $2 small blind. It doesn't seem to hurt those games; people play totally nuts anyway.
