I'm going up to Sacramento this weekend and probably won't have much to do at night -- where can I play 10-20 or higher up there, and how are the games on a Saturday night? I'll be on the northeast side of Sac towards Roseville.

There are several cardrooms on that end of town. At least on one Greenback Lane and a couple on Auburn Blvd.

I havn't played at any of these rooms in years (playing loball) so I can't vouch for what games or atmosphere, but I understand that it's easier to find mid-level games (4/8,6/12) than it is to find low level games (2/4,3/6), which why I haven't ventured to the local card rooms so far in my Holdem career.

If no-one else here can help you, it would be easy enough to call the places when you get into town.

The Lucky Derby at Greenback and San Juan in Citrus Heights spreads 15-30 Hold'em Thurs. thru Sat. nights.

The list will start mid afternoon, game starts at 7:00. Not sure if they allow call ins, but the day brush Jacobi is a nice guy.

The lineup really isn't bad, lots of the regulars that I play 4/8 against. Pretty passive. I've noticed some new faces lately, so word may be spreading about the game.

Best player there is a tall thin Asian guy with glasses, I think his name is Ed. The day shift manager Roger, stocky, white hair and beard, may also sit the game. He is an old-time L.A. player, so watch out for him.

These are both very nice guys whom I like, I just don't like to mix it up with them /images/graemlins/frown.gif.

If he can borrow the buy-in, you might see 'Rocky'. Sit to his left if you can /images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Phoenix on Auburn between Greenback and Madison was running a 10-20 in their nice new room a couple weeks ago Friday night, haven't been back so don't know if it's a regular thing.

Good luck

Since you seem to be a regular of these places -

What are the lower limits they spread?

What is the rake - hourly, %?

thanks

It looks like I'm also going to be in that area next week, and was wondering what kind of NL games are being spread. I probably won't bring a huge BR with me so a smaller max buyin table (e.g. $100 or so) would be preferable.

Lowest limit is 4/8. Rake is 3+1 per hand, at both Derby and Phoenix. No flop no drop.

No NL games in Sac area casinos, but you might PM yocalif to see about seats in his home game (see home poker forum).

All poker rooms are $3 drop + $1 Jackpot.

Capital Casino:
3/6 Blinds $3/$1 + $3 button - chip throwing contest
4/8 Blinds $4/$2 + $3 button - Typical loose
9/18 Blinds $9/$3 + $3 button - Varies, but generally better players.

Phoenix:
4/8 Blinds $4/$2 - $4 always taken - period. Typical loose game
4/8 half-kill $4/$2 - same drop. Win two ($20 min) and post a $6 kill. Good game - easy reads if your a regular mid-limit player.
10/20 Blinds $5/$10 - Been going for about 4-5 weeks. Thus far, mostly the better 4/8 players, though the 9/18 players from Capital and the 15/30 players from Derby have been showing up as well as bay area players.

Luck Derby: (No flop, only the $1 dropped)
4/8 Blinds $4/$2 button $1 (? - not sure). Typical
8/16 Blinds $8/$4 button $1 - Plays like a loose 10/20
15/30 Blinds $15/$5 button $1 - tough game, but beatable. Seen some Bay area players here too.

Silver Fox:
4/8 Havn't been there in a very long time, but the games have a rep of being wild. Also known for passive partner play (Wow, my friend seems like he has a good hand, I'll raise so he gets a bigger pot).

I beleive there is another out in Rancho Cordova and one in Folsom, but thats about it.

Sorry, the closest NL games are El Dorado, Reno NV and (I think) Luck Chance somewhere in the nothern bay.

Thanks for the replies! Unless something else comes up I'll probably try out the 15-30 or 8-16 at the Derby on Saturday night.

Derby 4/8 blind is 4 + 1 on button. No small blind.

Phoenix comps food, Derby doesn't. I thought they had changed their drop policy but could be wrong... swore blinds were chopped last time I played the 4/8.

So I spent the night in Sacramento on Saturday. Had nothing better to do so I headed to the Lucky Derby in Citrus Heights at around 9PM on Sat. They have 5 tables and all were full. 3 4-8 HE, 1 4-8 Omaha and 1 8-16 1/2 HE game. No 15-30 despite their advertising 15-30 on Thurs-Sat nights.

I put myself on the list for all the hold 'em games and quickly got called for a 4-8 game. It was good. There's a single big blind with a $1 live jackpot drop on the button and $3 raked from every pot where there's a flop (i.e. every pot in the 4-8 game). Two guys at my table appeared to have never played in a casino before. The game was very loose and very passive, except for one guy who was overaggressive. I won a few pots and then got called for the 8-16.

I thought it might be somewhat tough, figuring there would be some 15-30 players in it since they hadn't gotten the 15-30 started. I was wrong. There was a Vietnamese dealer in it who was playing hands blind. There was a woman who played any ace preflop and was very passive. There was a guy who played about 90% of his hands for any number of bets and admitted himself that it nothing would get him out of a pot if he caught a piece of the board, and there were a couple of loose overaggressive 20-something Asian guys. One guy appeared to be pretty solid -- a 20-something built white guy with a goatee named Shawn (maybe a 2+2'er?). The couple of other players were a little too loose and a little too passive. All in all it was a wild game and I got nailed putting lots of money in preflop/on the flop with the best hand and then losing it on the turn or river. I ended up down two racks... but wow -- it was a good game.

I had the dealer call a string raise on me on one hand when I was UTG with KQs (you have to put in exactly 8 chips and I put in 7? around here if you put in at least half of the chips necessary to raise it's not a string raise) -- so I limped. Newish player who was passive UTG+1 raised me despite seeing my raise attempt. Crazy Vietnamese guy 3-bet, somebody else capped with a few other people in and I thought a bit and threw my hand away. Flop was TT6 with two of my suit. It went 5-bets between passive any-ace woman and overaggressive Asian 25-year old (she called his 5-bet). She then called the turn and river when a 9 and a blank fell (neither completed the flush). He had QTo and she had 66 (any reasonable player should've had QTo's final stack that was still sitting in front of him). My limp-fold saved me about 9 small bets.

I asked about the 15-30 as well. Apparently they didn't have enough names on the list to get it started... Anyway -- thanks for the advice on where to go!
