So I didn't play much in November because I simply didn't have the time. In December, however, I started finding time again and ran pretty well. At Christmas, one of my best friends, who is in the Navy gave me a coin for his division. It's a very heavy, ornate coin, drop dead gorgeous with eagles and planes and engraving all over it.

So I decided I'd use this coin as my new card protector when I played poker as opposed to my more normal "whatever $5 chip is at the top of my stack" card protector.

So I played with this coin and had an awful session. 3 outer after 3 outer got there on me.

I retired the coin after only one session.

Of course, then I proceeded to run well again. Very well. OK, fabulously well. Been like that ever since.

Last night at the Mandalay, I found a kickasss "year of the monkey" chip in my stack. I kept it. I think I'll use that as my card protector from now on.

But not until I stop running well.

I'm 8-0 (+$3100) in live sessions using that bottle of tobasco sauce you so generously bestowed upon me back in August. I'm 1-1 (-$28) when it was left at home.

Coughing that up was clearly your worst play of the evening...sucker /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Clarkmeister,

Is there anyway you could post a picture of the YOM chip? Is it put out by Mandalay?

Thanks!

"But not until I stop running well."

I'm glad you didn't give James Brown (or Tommy Angelo) grammar lessons.

No doubt about it.

I try and use humor to get people to forget the poor grammar. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

PS, I'll be out your way the weekend after the tourney ends for a long weekend at Commerce. Did you get the email I sent you about a month ago regarding another poster here? If so, I'll send you more details via that email address as we get closer to that date. If not, let me know your current email address. I'm at dave121871@yahoo.com

Since you called this a "fun post," I will accept it in that spirit. I know you don't believe in such nonsense.
It's good to have you back with us. You've been missed.

Thanks for the kind words Al.

And while I can tell you with 100% certainty that I really don't believe in such nonsense, I can also tell you that it is extraordinarily unlikely that the cool Navy coin gets a second shot. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well, it may not have anything to do with luck. You see, you can hypnotize players with shiny objects or chips as one poker book points out. You are not hypnotizing your opponents properly. So you let the card protector sit there passively sending out messages. And the Navy coin makes people want to stand up to American imperialist aggression, so they come after you and get there. The monkey chip affects your opponents differently and they play worse. Now if you would try to hypnotize your opponents, rather than just sending out more passive signals, I think the Navy coin would work better. Because it is shiny and impressive and will draw their focus better. And the martial symbols will intimidate them. The mistake is to just chalk this up to luck and not the real psychological factors that are affecting your opponents. I think what would be best is to hypnotize your opponents with the Navy coin when you want a fold, and use the monkey chip when you want a call. (I admit you are more likely to hit the card you need when using the monkey chip, but I don't think this is the main reason you should use it to entice calls.)

One of my best friends is a naval officer and I have his ship's coin. I'm planning on playing this Friday and will use the coin so we can determine whether or not Navy coins are inherently unlucky for poker.

The $10 collector coins found in slots all over
Vegas having proven extremely lucky for my
friends and I. And by lucky, I mean psychologically
powerful. Just think "Catch me If You Can"... why
do the Yankees always win? The other team is too
busy staring at the pinstripes.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the coin, so I decided to try out a Hard Rock Casino dollar coin.

I sit down in the 10-10-20 NL game w/ a short stack of $1000. This is my first time sitting in this game - I usually play the 5-5 game.

First hand, QQ in the big blind. I lose. Rebuy.
Second hand, I muck the small blind.
Third hand, AK on the button. I lose. Rebuy.

I retired the coin at that point after a grand total of 3 hands and about 5 minutes, managed to flop a couple of sets and wind up fine. I think I'm going to stick w/ protecting my hand w/ chips.

I believe coins may just be bad in general.

I'm giving a little buddha statue (about a half dollar size in diameter, an inch high) that is meant to bring good fortune, that I acquired in Hong Kong awhile ago, a shot at covering my cards tomorrow in my live session. /images/graemlins/grin.gif He's a cute little bastard

The best way to bring luck is to use no card protector at all. Plus, put your cards barely shy of the line. You will hit your card on the river every time... I think you guys should try this. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've started using a White King from a chess board to protect my cards.

That way I can always say "I check my King"

I likey! The natural next step is to use both kings, eh? /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Very savvy to pick up on the unluckiness of the Hard Rock chip right away. A less experienced player would have gone home broke before he made the connection. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I thought of that. Too messy.

I might get a rocket, though...
