I was just laid off this month and I received an $820 severance package and as I am a solid player it will be enough for me to go professional as a poker player.
My first day was yesterday. I woke up at 0500 to get some resumes completed and do some cleanup around the apartment. I played the free net games to hone up for the real thing. I wanted to wait until late to get up to Cripple Creek so I could take advantage of the $20 buy-in tournament players who will now be stuck since they didn’t place in the tournament. I caught the 2130 bus to Cripple Creek, and since I have only been up 16 hours I knew I could get some sleep on the bus. The moon was shining on the new-fallen snow so I concentrated on that instead of sleeping.
I arrived at Cripple Creek about 2300, bought a rack of red, and got a seat at the $5-$5 table. As luck would have it I am in the big blind, so of course I put my money in. The individual to my left put in a straddle so now there is $20 in the pot. A mid position player calls followed by a later mid-position raiser (MPR) who I know will raise junk hands like AA or KK from any position. All others fold to the small blind who folds. I look down to see 24o and knowing that AA will most usually go down I reraise. That was intended to get the straddle and the mid position caller out which worked and put MPR and I heads-up.
Well, MPR pops it again and we go back and forth until it is capped at $85. The flop is a lovely 68J rainbow, which I know MPR has nothing of. I bet out and MPR foolishly raises again. I decide to just call to suck him in as his I know that his AK will not hold up.
The turn brings the T. I check, MPR bets, I reraise, and MPR reraises. I know I have his AQ beaten now so I just check so he won’t know the strong hand I am holding. MPR bets and I call. The river brings the lovely 2. Not wanting MPR to suspect anything I just check. MPR again foolishly bets and I reraise. Since it is heads-up we go down to the felt. I proudly turn over my hand to disclose the valued 22 but MPR shows off the junk hand of AA and takes down the pot.
Well, I still have $300, which I use to buy more red chips. I know if MPR continues to play that way I will have all of his chips before the casino closes at 0200.
I’m in the small blind now and UTG does not straddle. Everyone folds to a late position raiser (LPR). Since it is virtually impossible for AA to be dealt twice in a row I know that LPR cannot have AA. All fold to me where I see my beloved 67o so I raise. To make a long story short it goes about the same way as before except I do get my 7 on the turn and we go down to the felt again. A raise with the crappy AA again?? How can that be?? What are the probabilities of that happening?
The bus is not due for two more hours so I kill that time by grabbing the shirtsleeve of anyone passing close enough and gripe about how the bad players sucked out on me.
This morning I visited my 86 yo mother who is on a fixed income. I beg her until she grudgingly gives me $1000, which I tell her is for the rent and food. Since I am back in business again I can continue my new professional poker player career. I also know that if I lose this stake to others who suck out on me with their AA or KK played from any position I can still get another $1000 from Mom. At least I think she still has $1000 in her bank account since I never take her anywhere she can spend it.
Which of the following options should I, as a solid player, take:
1. I know that the Mirage $30-$60 game also has weak players who will even play AK from mid-position for a raise. Which night and what time would be the best to trap players such as them?
2. I can take the train to Los Angeles or the Bay area. What time and where can I find the weak players described above? At what level should I play?
3. I can take the $1000 and play a $200 - $400 two-coin slot at the MGM Grand.
4. I can stay here in Colorado and play several $5 slot machines at one time.
