I'm heading to Vegas next month for a long weekend - Thursday thru Sunday- staying at Mandalay and playing at Bellagio. I usually play during the day (4-8) and go out at night with my friends. The last time I played Bellagio during the day - all I saw were local retired rocks and the money just circled the table (less the rake).

Any advice for rockless daytime action or do I have to give up the nightlife for some decent play.

The Bellagio is the worst place on the Strip to play 4-8. Mandalay Bay has a lower rake ($3 rather than $4). It also has a half-blind structure which allows you to play more hands.

Play at Mandalay Bay or the Monte Carlo. Those games are easily beatable anytime.

Mandalay's tables are so spread out also its incredible. Plus you're basically in the sportsbook which is one of the nicer ones in vegas. If you play 4-8, why would you go all the way to the bellagio if you're staying on the south end of the strip?

In response to the esteemed replies:

1. I hate MB's card room - smoke, limited tables, small blinds means everyone's on a draw post flop and a floor staff that allows regulars to openingly dicuss their hands -maybe I'll try Monte Carlo or move up to 6-12 at the Bellagio.

2. MB (I like the rooms better than the Hard Rock or the Palms) is the place to stay if you're under 35, the Bellagio has basically become the business hotel of choice on the strip. BTW, I can afford the car or cab ride to get me around the strip - I love hearing from the 10-20/20-40 players who are concerned with cab fare or wonder when the monorail will open!!

3. For my fellow NJer - go Brooklyn Nets!!!

There is no 6/12 at the Bellagio, the next game up is 8/16. The Mirage has a 6/12.

But in general, if you want to go to Vegas to play poker and go out with your friends, play poker after your night out with them. The overnight action is the best and you can sleep during the day. Just don't drink too much before.

Barry:

Thanks for the advice - my daily Vegas schedule is very rigorous - gamble until 8:00 pm, dinner at 9:00 pm, clubs or bars until 3:00 - 4:00 am, hope to score some female companionship for the night, breakfast buffet at 11:00, a few trips around MB's lazy river and back to the tables at 1:00 pm. Repeat for 3 days and then sleep on the plane back to NYC.

I tried the overnight action at Bellagio when faced with a night alone. Played a short-handed table for a while until my pocket Q's got cracked by a no shower in 3 days, Fredo Corleone look-alike, who slow played his pocket K's with rags on the board and hit me for a big loss - never again.

I'll be a Foxwoods/Mohegan next week for Davis Cup and poker action.

I've stayed at MB, am under 30 and really don't get the hype about it being such a hip place. Its really not. The Hard Rock deserves the hype, mandalay is mediocre at priced as if it isn't. I haven't stayed at the Palms but have been there and its definitely something. I personally like MB's card room though due to mini-blinds and how much space you have, and being in the sportsbook so I can dump money on games I don't care about. Good times.

As for this upcoming weekend, in case you didn't know, Mohegan closed their poker room so their poker action is limited to Pai Gow, Let it ride or Caribbean stud/draw which doesn't really qualify.

CrakerZack:

MB is my personal preference because the rooms are nicer than Hard Rock and I like drinking at Rum Jungle.

I'm well aware of Mohegan's poker demise - I was there on the 2nd to final day when tempers were flaring from the upset regulars. My date who wants to watch Davis Cup tennis insisted we stay at the host venue Mohegan at $375 per night (I've stayed a weekend night at Bellagio for less)
but I get permission to play at FW at least six hours a day!!

I agree with your thoughts on MB's poker room. I couldn't stand having my AA and KK cracked because 8 people saw the flop going for insane draws. The staff wasn't particularly friendly to boot.

Anyway, if you're up to Bellagio, you might as well hit the Mirage. It's my favorite of all of them. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, when I was playing lower limits, I liked the brushes better at the Mirage, but since I made it to 15/30 there is no reason other than to visit with the Babe.

6 hours at FW, very nice. I've done quite a bit of drinking at the rum jungle myself but prefer the club at Hard Rock. Ra isn't bad when I was there but you have to catch it on the right night. I probably have odd tastes though because my favorite place I stayed in Vegas was at Caesar's. I might have selective memory as it was my first trip but the rooms were huge, and the location was tremendous. Good luck next weekend at FW. The games have been great but get there early.

I'm under 30 and hate the palms. The dealers are rude and the cardroom is small. I'd much rather play at bellagio. Hard Rock though, is absolutly great though. It definatly deserves all the hype.
