Aaron Boone tore up his kneed playing basketball. Apparently, his contract with the Yankees has language in it saying that if he plays basketball, his contract is not guaranteed. This paragraph, from ESPN, got my attention:

"Boone is eligible for free agency after next season, and if the Yankees successfully converted the deal to a nonguaranteed contract, they could release him and be responsible for only 30 days' termination pay, $917,553, instead of the full salary, which is paid over a 188-day season."

-That's a helluva "only," that $917,533 for 30 days. Imagine if the guy was any good.

The title is "boonedoggle", so I read the post.

How did they sign Soriano for, what, a mere $5 mil? Isn't that a steal, and very un-Yankee thrift?

Yes, it would appear Sorinao was a steal. Adrian Beltre also got $5million:

Beltre:
2002: 21 HR 75 RBI .257BA .303 OBP .426 SLP
2003: 23 HR 80 RBI .240BA .290 OBP .424 SLP
Total runs 2002-2003: 120
Total hits 2002-2003: 285
Total stolen bases 2002-2003: 9

Soriano:
2002: 39HR 102RBI .300BA .332OBP .547SLP
2003: 38HR 91RBI .290BA .339OBP .525SLP
Total runs 2002-2003: 242
Total hits 2003-2003: 407
Total stolen bases 2002-2003: 77

Yet the Yankees are apparently somewhat down on Soriano. He's a poor fielder, an unintelligent base runner, and strikes out a lot and doesn't walk very much. Still the guy hits close to 40 home runs and averages over 200 hits a year.

It could be worse. I saw Albert Belle's name on the list of available free agents. lol.
