View Full Version : How to get a handful of chips?

This doesn't have anything to do with home games, but I figured it'd be the best place to ask since you guys know all about chips.

I wanted to get myself a handful of chips, maybe 10-20 to practice some chip tricks at home, but naturally I don't want to buy a case of 500. Any ideas on how to get some for cheap besides smuggling them out of a B&M?

Some chip suppliers will send you samples if you send a SASE. There are earlier posts in this forum with links if you do a search. Good luck!

A couple of ideas:

1) www.5startdeal.com (http://www.5startdeal.com) sells single chips. Just go there, select Casino Supplies, and then select Poker Chips. they have various styles ranging from $0.10 to $0.80 each. You could get 8gr ones for like a dime each, and then the 11.5 gram for $0.26 each. Buy 20 for a bit over $5, add a few bucks for shipping and I am guessing you could have a about 20 for under $10.00

2) Ebay (of course...) - I have seen single color of the 50 chips sell for about $12-$15.00, but then you take on another $5.00 for shipping. So may be a bot mroe than you want to spend, especially if you don't need so many

My advise is to go to 5star, and then order like 10 of one color and 10 of another. I am also just starting to try to do some of the tricks (and failing miserably, but that is another story) and in some cases it is easier if you have different color chips (like if you are trying to learn the shuffle)

Heck, get four colors, 5 of each - I think at 5star you can get whatever # you want.

While deciding where to order chips from I got samples from the two places I was considering. They sent them out for free, 2 from one place and 3 from another. Some places sell sample sets. I did exactly what you want to do -- I used the samples to practice chip tricks!

the chain store Gamer's Paradise, usually found in malls, may sell individual chips there. I found my 'lucky' chip there (i use it to protect my hand when playing) for like a quarter in a box of similar chips.

Ask for sample chips and make sure you ask if it's possible to get one of each color. One site gave me 5 chips. Apparently they sent me "damaged" chips, but I couldn't tell the difference other than minor scratches that are on 2 of them.

Thanks guys. 5star looks like the best place. I'll grab a few black 11.5g and an equal number of whites and start shuffling away.

My expert shuffling skills will strike fear into the hearts of all low-limit players. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I decided to learn some chip tricks because I like to learn new things. While I can do one or two now (I really like the pull the middle chip out, rotate it and put it back, whatever that is called), I intentionally DO NOT do chip tricks at the poker table at a B&M or other live game. I don't want to give the impression I'm better than the other players. I want to fit in. At a neighborhood game with the boys I like to show off, but not with people I don't know. I realize that better players will quickly see I'm not playing many hands and showing down winners, etc., but the more I can fit in and be friendly with the fishy players, the better. I want them to like me while I take their money.

I actually had to start practicing shuffling because of extreme boredom waiting for a hand. I think it was 45 minutes or so without anything keep-able before I started fiddling with 2 stacks of 3 chips. An hour later I could do it right 25% of the time.

Maybe I should bring a gameboy or something.

Maybe you should pay attention to the players in the game. Your time spent learning to read people will help you infinitely more than tinkering with your chips.

Whats wrong with "smuggling" a few $1 chips out of a B&M...you can even take them back when you learn your awesome chip tricks.

Go to the Casino, buy $10 dollars in whites and your good to go.

Many low rent casinos still have 10 cent roulette chips. Ten for a dollar is as good as it gets.
