View Full Version : Running Cold... Serious Question OL vs Live!

I have a serious question I have limited live play experience but have had a few "extended vegas trips" etc... That have lead to a good 150 days of live play (average 10 hrs per day).

Online, 6 yrs... average of 4 hrs every single day....

Still not a + EV but I am getting closer and starting to read books (used to be about gambling to me). At what point should a player give up (don't say never u fishermen lol)

Also, It seems I will run cold ALOT LONGER Online the live.. talking 4 - 5 times as long easy. Has anyone else experienced this?

And I am not talking TILT, until about 4 months ago I would of called a tilt running cold.. But I have learned more in the last 4 months and my play has improved more in the last 4 months then entire time I played before that

Has anyone else experienced the same, and how do u handle it.. play at same limits and play through it... Drop limits?

Seems lately I will drop limits then get more bad beats as people suck out more the lower limit you go..

Any suggestions or links to posts that are excellent on how to deal with running cold would be appreciated.

BTW I don't keep great records but I would say I am up 7500 in live play over all playing 10 20 or 20 40 at mirage, 15 30 at bellagio.. occasionally the 4/8 and 3/6 (bel mir respectively)

Internet Lost alot more then that, we'll leave figures alone right now..

Well you could try taking a day off /images/graemlins/smile.gif

After about 100-130 BB drop I change games. Usually down, sometimes up. And if I drop another 100 BB or so then it's NL time.

Cyndie, checking that out now.. Actually I have preview post box checked so I read it and my post wasn't posted /images/graemlins/blush.gif)

Excellent post - I need to read that book about tilting - Chineese name.. sorry I'm drunk now or I would remember it.
Yeah I drink a bit but only play frerolls or 5.00 SnG's when drunk.. And of course .01/.02 which is funny as hell on UB! LOL

Everyone who has run cold EVER (which is EVERYONE) should read that post if you don't have a grip on your emotions, which I personally feel (more and more as the days go on) is the NUMBER ONE FACTOR in long term poker success, period.

And no book told me that, that's just how I feel.......

Robk - dude u have the mentality I used to have. You don't want to know how much the move up in stakes to make up for losses at lower stakes decision has cost me, trust me you really don't.. I see you have ALOT of posts under your belt so maybe u have a playing style that allows you to do that, but personally I do not as I don't think most players do that are merely trying to be +EV players not profesionals.

Eventually I would love to be a prpfessional player and hand my businesses over to my right hand "woman". But that is far away...

On the positive side I honestly think 2004 will be my first +EV year ever as I see myself making folds I can't believe I am making.. Right move 90% of the time.. Remembering the 90% instead of the 10% now instead of vice versa... Unfortunate for all you sharks who wil still tear me up, but fortunate for me /images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I folded an open ended str8 flush draw tonight when guy bet allin T2000 I had T1800 because I couldn't justify making the call and goingout in 4th in a sit and go. It didn't hit, althought some other hands I folded that night did that most people would have called.

Long way to go, but for the 1st time I actually see improvement in not only my EV ratio but my attitude, style of play, and crucial decisions I am making Online.

Hate to say it but OL poker is a win/lose situation

You can be a long term winner but you have to have a very very very good mentality to be high stakes winner.. which means you leanred that from live play.

My suggestion to new players would be learn to play live if uhave the opp. to then go online...

If not play online .5/1.00 games - boy if u can handle ur emotions there (not about the MONEY!) the way those suckers draw out u can handle any 15/30 suckout that hits ya...

Just some quick thoughts, not like you haven't had these /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Move down to the point that it doesn't matter if you win or lose.

Play tight(first 3 S&M only unless everyone is in) Aggressive, when you hit, go like hell until you see the scare card and then check call to the river or fold.

Quit while you have a small win a few nights, helps the ego re-inflate

Begin adding hand groups as you feel comfortable and move back up.

I'm sure this didn't cover everything but works for me /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

6 years of online poker and still in the red?
Make yourself a favor and quit playing OL. Stick to live poker if you can beat that game.
Take care,
William
