View Full Version : SnGs WIN RATES similar to ring games??

While playing 2 tables online, a few times I played a third table of 10+1 SnG for fun. Out of my last 5, I won 2 and 2 second places.

Does anyone exclusively play SnGs low limits?
Is the win win rate comparable to ring games?
What about variance?

thank you

naturally your variance for SNGs is high because it's an all-or-nothing shot. but if you play within your bankroll limits, i think you should be fine. try to have at least 50 buy-ins in reserve, if not more.

i find that good SNG players usually win at a good rate, and know several people who can't win in ring games but do very well in SNGs.

It was my understanding that Sit and Go variance is less than ring game variance. I have never looked into this much, but have read it several times.

I also think that 50 buyins is on the high side for a sit and go bankroll.

for SNGs is probably easier to estimate than for a ring game.

Baseline: assume you are a totally average player with a 10% chance of finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Std Deviation of your results from a $10+$1 entry SNG is just under $17. Obviously your EV is -$1.

If you make realistic assumptions about possible percentages for placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, for a winning player, your variance will be somewhat higher, but probably not more than $20/SNG. (Maximum theoretical SD is $25/SNG for someone who finishes either first or last with 50% probability.)

To compare to a ring game variance, you need to decide what level of ring game you are comparing to, and estimate the duration of a SNG (my guess is average of 40 minutes from start to win/elimination).

That gives about $25 for the SD of an hour's play at $11 SNGs, which is somewhat less than the SD of an hour's play at a 1-2 limit game. (Maybe about equivalent to a $0.75-$1.50 limit game?)

Huh? Since HE SnGs pay top 3, how is it an all or nothing shot? In my experience, the variance in SnGs is much lower than in ring games.

50 Buy-ins os more than enough. 30 is plenty for all but the worst swings.

I'm an average player.

Here's my results over the past few days (since I started keeping track). The rake is a killer on these $5 SNGs.

However I'm doing a SNG OIC for myself. Once I get to $200-250 I will start $10 SNGs, get to $500 I will start $20 SnGs, etc...drop down to 15xEntry drop down to the lower level.

Date Site Game Place Entry Win Net
1/14/2004 Party NLHE 2 $6 $15 $9
1/14/2004 Party NLHE 4 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 5 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party PLHE 5 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 5 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 2 $11 $30 $19
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 6 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 4 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 3 $6 $10 $4
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 6 $6 $0 -$6
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 1 $6 $25 $19
1/15/2004 Party NLHE 5 $6 $0 -$6
1/16/2004 Party NLHE 4 $6 $0 -$6
1/16/2004 Party NLHE 1 $6 $25 $19
1/16/2004 Party PLHE 5 $6 $0 -$6
1/16/2004 Party NLHE 1 $6 $25 $19
1/16/2004 Party NLHE 8 $6 $0 -$6

Totals 3.94 $107 $130 $23

The 3.94 is my average finish. I had $77 in my account when I started this so I'm up to $100 now lol.

Keep us informed Bradley.

Personally, simply because of the rake, I'd be tempted to move up at $220.
A 20 SNG downswing is extremely large at these limits, and although you won't be in the 99% safety range, what you save in silly rake is probably worth the risk.

Stars, and from memory, UB run 5+0.5 SNG's, maybe they would be better sites to kickstart your challenge at.

A SNG OIC sounds cool. What parameters have you set?

I usually play $10 to $30 on 'Stars (NLHE normally). If i stop myself losing it back in cash games there I might do a OIC....look forward to hearing from anyone with limit parameters...

cheers

You seem to imply that SnGs are easier to make money at than ring games.

Is this generally correct?. Up to what limits?.

I'm for making money as fast as possible and if that means to drop money games for SnG's , so be it.

I generally play 6-seat ring games and I'm progressing to 2-4 soon, I adapt well to fewer players too. What level SnG would I need to play to make more or less the same as the 3.5 BBs per table-hr I make in rings?.

Input from experienced SnG'ers very appreciated.

i guess if you play at limits where you have similar win rates, you may have a greater SD in ring games. but if you take $11 to a ring game table, i bet your SD will be lower than if you played an SNG with it.

I would have to disagree. My odds of making $11 into more at a $10 + $1 sit and go is 50% from my records. But if i took $11 into ring i wouldnt feel the same 50% comfort in a 1/2 game.
