I will be in Paris, France and then Florence & Venice, Italy in early October. Do these countries have casinos/card rooms? I understand they don't really play limit Hold 'Em in Europe, but more pot limit and no limit. Can anyone steer me toward a web site or some good information?

Hi Shawn,

if you are in Paris, be sure to check out the "Aviation Club de France". It is located on the Avenue Champs-Elysee (nr. 114, if I remember correctly), about 300 meters in front of the Arc de Triomphe. You cannot miss it. And you should not miss it. It is certainly one of the most beautiful places on this planet to play poker. And they have superb food as well.

For other info concerning card rooms and poker in Europe go to

There you should find all the cardrooms and info you are looking for.

Florence? No. Venice? close by...in Slovenia. From Venice, its a nice boat ride about 1.5 hours across the Adriatic. Slovenia has a little Monte Carlo area called Portoroz (port of roses) there are about 6 hotel/casinos there. Many Italians go across. Pretty sure not open 24 hours.

The largest casino in Europe is in Nova Gorica (Novo Goriza, in Italian) Anyways, this is about a 1.5 hour drive from Venice to Slovenia. Most clientele are Italian. The dealers speak Italian, and the lire is the currency. During the week, the casino offers black-jack, roulette, let it ride, etc. No poker...only on the weekends. Table games only open after 2 p.m.

From Italy, it is not far to Austria...Austria has many poker clubs...check the website from the previous poster.

BTW: don't waste your money eating in Venice. Get out into the Italian country side as much as possible...great local eats. If you really, really want a great deal...head over to Slovenia to a country kitchen or any good "Gostilna" in a small town...you will eat and drink like a KING! Slovenia has some of the best wine in the world...Try the Refosk, or the Tiran. If you do eat there, try the venison goulaz with gnocci.

Piran, right across from Venice, was built by the Venitians (same boat to Portoroz) Got to see it...great seafood too.

If you don't take a day off from your Florence stop to see Siena, you, my friend, are a fool. 45 minute drive...go there for the day, stay for a great dinner with local chianti. Buy leather goods somewhere other than Florence...same products, less price.

Finally, if you are thinking of a day trip to Pisa don't waste your time...try an overnighter in the CINQUE TERRE...you will die its so nice.

One last note...Venitians are pretty rude and stuck up; wouldn't you be if your town was a de-facto Disneyland? At any given time, tourists outnumber locals 2-1.

Have a great trip...you will, too.

Oski,

Thanks for the tips. My girlfriend has friends in Italy, so I'm letting her plan that part, but I'll pass along the info. We're going to rent a car and drive all over, so I'll print out your tips and plan from there....

awesome...driving is the best way...Be forwarned, the driving in Florence is CRAZY. LOL. Near downtown, my wife and I were on a 5 lane street that had no lane markings, it was like all hell broke loose - Vespas everywhere, cars all over the place. Italians just point and go, no matter what is in the way.

Be advised the superstrade is a great freeway, but beware of the left lane. This lane is only used to pass, you will be ticketed for driving in it. Also, the average speed is goes about 120 km (80 mph) but routinely cars will go 150 up...always keep an eye out behind you they will jet by out of nowhere. Also pay attention to car-light laws in the different countries. Some require lights on at all times, some will ticket (parts of Italy, around Trieste for sure) for having lights on during the day.

Since you have a car, try to hit Slovenia...ask your hosts. Think about seeing LAKE BLED and if you like horses, go to LIPICA, home of the famous Lipizzaner Stallions of the Hapsburgs. Lipica has a casino...open in the late afternoon.

Also in that area is the largest cave system in Europe, which is in Postonja.

Just another option...especially if you want to see something different
