after working my way up from .50/1 to 2/4 on full tables i decided to try out 1/2 6 max at party for fun. man am i hooked! it took a little time and a few losses but im winning more now than i did at 2/4 full tables. i have enough bankroll for 3/6 full tables. is there an advantage to staying sharp in both short and full or if i prefer short handed should i just wait until i have enough of a roll for 5/10 short? is the 5/10 6 max very much tougher than the 1/2? thanks.

Hey, 5/10 is a lot tougher than 1/2. And by a lot I mean instead of 99% of players being totally awful, and 1% being okay, now only about 40-50% are awful, 35% are okay, and 15% are pretty good to very good. It's a very profitable game, though.

Yeah that 1/2 is a fun game. The 5/10 like James said is quite a bit tougher. Stick with 1/2 until you are killing it in your sleep and you have the 3K BR for 5/10.

There are big differences between the two, but mostly its the level of aggression. Its not too hard to find a 1/2 6 max table where you almost always get a free play in the blinds. This is rare at 5/10, as most pots are raised.

I think you should move up... If anything, you might stare out by being a break-even to above average player at that level, but you will gain enough experience to start winning more and more and the experience may be worth more than the fex extra $/hr you will not be making. (I don't think you could learn to be a great player at 1-2 but 5-10 is closer to the level you need to be playing at to become great over time)

If you wanna take a stab at it, go ahead, just realize that even 200 big bets probably isn't enough for the swings, so if you lose, drop back down while you still have a bankroll for 1/2.

As for the difference, 5/10 is a bit more tight-aggressive, but the players are still pretty bad. The 5/10 6 max at party is actually easier than the 3/6 6 max at stars. The jump from 1/2 to 5/10 is pure genius IMO since it creates a huge game, rather than several smaller ones. This leads to more fish.

I will say this with a good amount of certainty: The difference between the 1/2 and 5/10 is less than the difference between the 10/20.

When I started low, I eventually realized something. "I'm a novice. 99% of novices are too tight, and too passive. I'm going to try to play overly tight, and overly aggressive, and see how I do as a result." The funny thing is, even when I TRIED to play overly tight/aggressive, I was still slightly on the loose/passive side.

Long story short: move up, leave a safety net to return to 1/2, and stay tight/aggressive.
