When discussing how the house gets its cut remember there are all kinds of methods, some of which are dictated by law or other reasons. Here are a few that come to mind:

Time collection – used in Los Angeles mid to upper limits (except some stud games)

Time pots. The winner of the big pots when the collection light is on pays for everybody. You see this in big games.

Dead drop/collection on the button. The collection is taken no matter what and doesn’t count toward your bet. This was common in Los Angeles button games from the mid nineties to the beginning of this year.

Live drop/collection on the button. The collection is taken no matter what but does count toward your bet. This was common in Northern California.

Collection from the pot with no qualifier. This is common in Los Angeles at limits 9/18 and below as of the beginning of 2002.

Drop from the antes in stud. It can be taken no matter what, or after a qualifier of some sort.

Percentage rake with incremental triggers. This is the standard Las Vegas style rake. For example, 5% with a $3 cap. A dollar is taken on a $20 pot, an additional dollar on a $40 pot, and a final dollar when the pot is $60 or more.

Rake with posted triggers. Foxwoods used this last time I played. They take a dollar on $20, another dollar on $40, another dollar on $80, and a fourth dollar on $160.

Drop on qualify. The full drop is taken either on a flop, forth street in stud, or after a fixed amount of called action is in the pot.

There are probably some I haven’t thought of, but is important to note HOW the house gets its money as well as the amount it gets.
