counting outs with a straight

Hi, I have a question about outs in hold’em. If I hold a 5 and the flop is 6, 7, 8 I know I have 8 outs to get a straight. But what happens if I hold a 5 and the flop is a 8, 9, K. It does not seem reasonable to say I need 8 outs since I need both the 6 and the 7 to hit the straight. How should I count the outs in this situation?

That's a situation you really don't want to be in, since if you make your hand, it will still loose to any T. The odds against making your hand is approximately 67 to 1. Compare that with the str8draw which is about 2.2 to 1.

I was just using cards at random. It could have been me holding an 8 and the flop being J, Q, 2. But I was thinking that I could be in a situation where I might have a flush draw or maybe I paired one of the cards, maybe my other card was a Q and the pot may not be large enough to call. I thought that the possible straight it might boost the odds up just enough to make a call worthwhile.
