There are better tourney players then me out there (although I am solid) but I don't think you are good yet. Play extremely tight and don't put your chips at risk.

You're not in autofold range, but you can be very selective with your hands(duh).

Never underestimate the stupidity of your opponents. Most of these guys will shoot themselves in the foot.

I saw a guy 2 nights ago that took a nose dive from over 100k to go out just out of the money. If he would have put it on autopost, he would have coasted in easily. For the most part, these people suck.

Well I've thought about it some more of course and I'm not sure what else I could have done here towards the end. Clearly I had some terrible luck in several spots, such as moving into the blinds and to the immediate left of the tard hruby, going pretty card dead towards the end, and running into a big stack's pocket aces with my... pocket aces. But I think most of my choices were pretty good and the right ones. I of course am interested in hearing other's opinions.

I don't think I could have done anything else the few tough spots I was in - namely the open raising A4s on the button, short stacked SB calling with AT, flop coming ace high. I think the pocket 8's play was debatable as well - reasonable EP open limped, it was folded to me on the button, and I folded them also. I'm also thinking I MAY have folded on the final hand when I raised in EP w/ AQo, LP coldcalled, and the big blind 3-bet. I dunno, though. As it was I was drawing very thin preflop (and didn't get there anyways) vs AK and KK.

However there's two things here that I think were fairly obvious. One is that I underestimated how many chips I needed to make it. The other is that due to #1 there, I really needed to be more aggressive. I didn't go for any real steals with some junk like I should have a few times, and I gave away my SB a few times with some junky stuff that may have been successful in stealing too. Part of this is that I'm not particularly experienced in limit hold'em tournaments. While I enjoyed it, I certainly would have preferred NL as it would likely only take me 5 hours to bubble out instead of the 8 it did this time. Oh well.

Any more thoughts from anyone?

Playing 8 hours and busting out just out of the money is a terrible strategy. In a tournament like this you should either bust out much earlier or make the money.

Ulysses

So, in the midst of writing my silly response to Vehn, I thought of something that's perhaps mildly interesting. Wouldn't it be interesting if you could sell your tournament entry in the middle of a tournament, chips and all? I'm going to make a post on the Tournaments forum about that.

CrackerZack
01-05-2004, 05:56 PM
Oddly, I couldn't sleep last night probably due to teh fact I was getting up at 2 in the afternoon for the past week and a half while not working and found myself thinking about your tourney. I'm convinced I'm mentally unwell, but getting past that. A4 running into AT was just bad luck. I was saying to the screen after you raised PF and were coldcalled by a huge stack and reraised by an even huger stack, "Fold, save the chips, Fold." I've thought about it a bit more and still think its a fold there. Hruby, while nuts and constantly stealing, could be played back at and relieved of some chips. It really really sucks to be in a tourney like that, and have to 3-bet with AJo or 77 so close to the money but with him, you could've done it and hoped not to get unlucky and get some chips back. I agree about underestimating the chips needed to coast. When you had 84K you were looking good, but far from a lock as no one was going away easy. Did the tournament forum have any advice on this?

Sucks that you busted out on the bubble. I played in the PPM semi a couple of years ago, IIRC (much smaller field), and they were giving out 8 seats to the boat. 9th place got something like 5K. I finished 10th, good for 100 bucks or something, which didn't even cover my entry. After 8 hours of looking at that damn comupter screen, I felt ill.

I went to bed, and my girlfriend asked me "How did you do?" I told her. She couldn't help but laugh. I did too. Then I didn't sleep all night. Just stared at the ceiling for 8 hours. The worst beat of all is that I got the flu the next day. Woo hoo!

I don't know why I'm sharing this story, but it makes me smile today.

Vehn has accused me of never posting in a poker related thread thread. In order to appease his thirst I am commenting on this tourney thread he initiated.

It really sucks to play all day in a tournament and bust out with no cash eh Vehn?

I hope this satifies your request Vehn. Anything else?

PS: If ever you feel down and out just mark this thread in your favorites and feel Vehn's anguish, it will work wonders.

ROFL. Anguish, to place 40th out of 1300 people and it cost me less than my big blind at my B&M game? You really never have played poker in your life, have you? Why don't you head back to your little pet thread and answer the question I've asked twice now?
