Should you always slow down on the river

I have been caught a few times tonight woth trips on the river when the 3rd suit falls,usually i was 1st to bet and had been shown no resistance on the previous streets,should you just bet away and hope for the best.
I suppose checking will be a losing play in the long run,will it?

My play is usually to bet until someone tells me they like their hand. Then depending on what I hold and my read on the player decide to call or raise. With trips or better I'm going to call it down. 1 or 2 pair maybe not.
