View Full Version : too tight?

I’ve been listening to the advice of many of the posters here and tightening my pre-flop standards. I’m wondering if I’ve gone overboard so I’m posting some numbers.

Total: Total Flops Seen (%)
Quality: Flops Seen when neither the SB nor BB (%)
Result: Place Finished/Total Entrants (in the money finishes are marked *)

Recent Multis on Stars (I don’t keep good stats on my UB tourneys since keeping stats there actually requires some effort, but I would guess my numbers are about the same):

Total .. Quality .... Result ....... Buyin
14% ..... 7% ....... 3/320* ..... $30+3
14% ..... 11% ..... 51/153 ..... $100+9
36% ..... 25% ..... 84/185 ..... $100+9
17% ..... 10% ..... 48/189 ..... $100+9
15% ..... 10% ..... 97/142 ..... $100+9
18% ..... 11% ..... 37/161 ..... $100+9
43% ..... 20% ..... 171/176 ..... $100+9
24% ..... 14% ..... 20/183 ..... $50+5
19% ..... 12% ..... 58/449 ..... $20+2
13% ..... 11% ..... 26/114 ..... $100+9
16% ..... 8% ....... 5/394* ..... $20+2

I also looked at my SnG’s where I finished sixth or better (I play the two-table sng’s with buyins $10, $20, and $30). My numbers there were a little higher: 26% total flops and 14% quality flops on average. I think this is due to the less aggressive preflop play in the early stages of sng’s relative to the play in multi’s, but I could be wrong. Any comments on expected differences in % flops seen between sng’s and multi’s appreciated…

Back to the multis, it’s easy to see that I’m probably overmatched in 100+9 tourneys, so I’ve decided to stick to the 20 and 30 buyins with an occasional 50 for now (plus a few satellites to the big buyins just for kicks).

In the meantime, am I seeing too few flops to give myself a chance or are these numbers about right? I’m just curious as to what % the better players see.

Thanks in advance to all who take the time to respond!

If you take a good look at your stats almost half of your flops seen are from the blinds. Sounds like that's where a major leak in your game is because you're not playing much else besides premium hands outside the blinds.

What do you think about hands like 66 or 9Ts in MLP early in the tournament when you can limp in?

I limp with any pair (unless it's a big pair that I would raise with) and with almost all suited connectors (and some one-gappers) in MLP early in tourneys. Actually, I will limp in EP in these situations until I'm convinced that limping will be consistently punished.

Any other ideas on where the leaks might be (i.e. other hands I should play, but probably don't given my low % of flops seen)?
