View Full Version : Terminology: smooth call, cold call

What do these mean, and how do they differ from "call"?

To me, cold call implies one has not yet called the raised pot and therefore has to put in 2 or more bets. Smooth call seems a little more slippery, and perhaps refers to calling a raise when you've already called the first bet. It could be a subset of slowplay for all I know, which is very little.

I must be missing something on the "smooth call" action because it seems silly to add the word smooth to the action, as if to imply that the action is somehow a confident and unfaltering decision.

i think its usually 'just smooth call'.

as in, i had the nuts but just smooth called the raise so the four people behind me could contribute to my college fund.

So, smooth call = call, as in slow play by a smooth character.

Cold call= calling multiple bets at once.

ex. UTG raises, I three bet with KK and the button cold calls. To take it further, if UTG had aces he might reraise or "smooth call" the three bet.
