In reading these reports:
EU Observer (http://euobs.com/?aid=13722&rk=1)

Financial Times (http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1069493585206&p=1012571727 088)

I am beginning to wonder if we now have a 51st state and one less independent than say VT in that the UK has to "consult" with Washington about whether or not to use a tissue after a sneeze.

What happened to the great imperial global power of Britain in 50 short years?

Hitler brought it to an end. Although Great Britain was on the winning side of World War II, that war devasted the Brits' power in the world. They were like Apollo Creed at the end of Rocky. They won but they had absolutely nothing left. (Yes, good historical analysis always uses boxing movies as metaphors).

As far as being the 51st U.S. state, that title will always belong to Canada no matter how much they hate it.
