When did the number of rounds change from 15 to 12 for a professional fight? Was it the late 1970's?

Thanks

In early 1987, sometime after Febuary. I am searching for the exact date. Keep in mind that some bouts held in Europe were still 15 rounds in the 80's yet only 10 rounds in South America and 12 rounds if held in the USA. In Conneticut there were championship bouts in 1997 that were only 10 rounds. There may be no definitive answer to your question unless you specify a particular location such as Las Vegas for instance.

The latest heaveyweight fight I can find that went 15 rounds was Larry Holmes v Michael Spinks on April 19th of 1986 in Las Vegas.

The Mancini-Kim fight was the catalyst. Also, the networks preferred 12, fit it all in an hour. I believe the WBC went to 12 first, the IBF last, thus the Holmes-Spinks.

Check Simon Brown's record, he fought in one the last 15ers(a 14th rnd KO win)

.... Mancini-Kim was a shame, but it and Mancini-Chacon were immortalized in the all-time best Boxing song, "Boom Boom Mancini", by Warren Zevon.

I remember perfectly what the last 15 round scheduled fight was. It involved and was won by a guy whose last name was Grove. I'm pretty sure it was still in the Eighties because he had one of those flat top Afros that singers like Cameo and Kid's n' Play used to have. It was in one of the lower weight divisions. And it was for the IBF title.

Also Jore Paez vs Calvin Grove might be the last 15 rounder in 88'? A few years ago one of the new startup organizations tried and reviving the 15 rounder(I think it was the National Boxing Association).

Thanks. Yes I meant here in the states, like in Vegas.
