I just purchase a "Greatest Hits Brahms" CD and it contains some blubs about J Brahms's life and this one struck a cord with me so I will share it with the rest of the misanthopes on this forum. I quote:

[ QUOTE ]
Brahms, perfectionist, ruthlessly self-critical, finishes his First Symphony after 21 years of experiment. Brahms says of the Finale, with its accessible hymn-like main theme, "every idiot will appreciate it instantly".

Unfortunately (for both us AND the artist himself), this trait seems to be necessary for the production of great art in many cases.

See: Beethoven, Van Gogh, Sade, Nick Cave, Lenny Bruce, Wagner, Bill Hicks, Hermann Nitsch, Jackson Pollock, Pasolini, Henry Miller, Swans, Bergman, Celine, TOOL, Charles Bukowski, David Sklansky, and Mason Malmuth.
