Righto! I'm hitting Australia for 8 months on the typical Brit gap year that i'm doing before i go to university next year. I'll be staying in mostly Sydney and Gold Coast, Queensland up untill Feb, then Sydney and other parts of ozland.

Just wonder if we have any aussie players with us, if so, do the casinos offer a wide range of stakes for hold 'em? Or am i going to have to quickly learn other poker games too? NL/PL available or just high stakes limit? Any other comments too?

Internet poker wise; There are internet cafes everywhere i hear, and most of the places i'll be staying offer free i'net access. I wont be able to take my laptop though and hook it up since i'll be moving about too much but what are your thoughts on trying to make it online with the extra expense of paying for the 'net and will it even be possible to download/use the software in the dorms? I very much doubt i will be able to in a i'net cafe. Suggestions?

Here's the opinons on if i should just play for fun or a living. I'm capable of beating both limit/no limit hold 'em for more than i'll make fruit picking! ...but if i get stuck with australia only offering high stake games i wont have much of a bankroll to play and probably wont be able to play for anything other than fun. NL wise, my bankroll can be smaller due to variance. I could take a bankroll of around £3000 but it wouldn't really be a bankroll, once it dropped below £1000 i would have to stop just for the sake of keeping money for the rest of the trip while waiting on jobs, etc.

Thinking over it, say i have a bankroll for $5/$10 (USD) live i'm only going to hit around 1BB/hour and that's pretty much equal to a regular job without having to put up with swings and having a constant wage. So that lives i'net poker as my only out, which is looking slim. That is if they don't offer NL/PL which my winrate is a lot higher with less variance, but if it's $1000USD min buy in NL i'm going to have trouble playing my A game.

Thoughts? Or just get ready to fruit pick?

"I'll be staying in mostly Sydney and Gold Coast, Queensland up untill Feb, then Sydney and other parts of ozland."

WTF???????? /images/graemlins/confused.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Your comming to Australia to play poker but your not comming to crown casino in Melbourne???

Sydney casino doenst have a poker room

i think QLD does but im not sure if they have holdem

Perth (Western Australia) has a poker room, but they dont offer holdem they only have manila (so im told). Ill assume you've never heard of manila, It differs from hold em in that you must use BOTH your hole cards!, its played 7 up and instead of a flop everyone gets dealt 2 cards and then ONE community card is placed face up, another card is dealt face up untill 7 community cards are shown.

South Australia doesnt have a card room

I live in Melbourne (can u tell /images/graemlins/grin.gif), and can state for the record that Crown Casino is the PREMIERE casino of Australia.

SO if your comming to OZ and want to play poker, you SIMPLY must come to Melboure.

OK, the games that are offered at Crown

they have 4/8 HE (the loweset limit, thats like 1/2 to you poms /images/graemlins/grin.gif)

8/16 HE/ Ohi (one round of HE then one round of Ohi

10/20 HE

1/2 pot limit 5 card stud $2 ante

1/2 pot limit 5 card draw (blinds 5/10)

and manila

Occasionally:

20/40 HE

7 card stud

Only seen it once

PL HE

PL Omaha dealers choice 0hi/08

200/400 Ohi

I've never seem a NL game at Crown

There are tournaments on every Thursday and Sunday, entry is only $65

places 4 - 10 get their entry fee back and 1 - 3 finish in the money.

"I could take a bankroll of around £3000"

I just checked the exchange rates from pounds to AUD and 3000 pounds is about 7000 AU dollars

with that much cash id suggest playing 10/20 HE

at 4/8 HE (were i play) the rake is really high, however at 8/16 and at 10/20 the rake is smaller in comparison

In the last couple of months 10/20 has become really popular, and the list is always long. Recently a lot of 4/8 players have been trying their luck at 10/20. (does this mean Softer games??? i think so)

Hope your not a smoker, as you cant smoke at the tables anymore, you have to go to the bar to smoke.

Internet poker wise "suggestions"

Ive never been to a net cafe and i agree its unlikley that you can download the software there.

Do you have a mobile/cellular phone??

You can buy cards that give you x amount worth of calls, you dont need to sign any contracts, once you buy the card you just have to make a call to activate it. Primus telecom offer unlimited access for $25 dollars a month, as long as you dont mind dial up, you could try calling them and seeing if you can set up an account and pay in advance...just thinking out load, im sure there is a way to get online from your laptop.

ALSO in January the Australian Poker Championships start, but entry into these events are pretty expensive (couple hundred i think?)

Final thoughts

1. YOU MUST COME TO MELBOURE

2. I'm sure there is some way you could play online, so bring your laptop

3. As for playing live for a living while your here, due to the higher rake and less hands per hour, I dont know if its possible, you might want to post this a general quesion in the HE geneal section

4. DONT pick fruit........IT SUCKS!!!!!

Hey thanks for the reply.

Holiday wise, i'm not really coming to australia to play poker. Just for a long 8 month holiday, i thought i could try playing for living instead of fruit picking or getting bar work. So i don't want to change the trip order to get some poker in, i'm not that much of an addict yet /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Melbourne isn't a place i've heard much about at the moment, so far i've just being added things to do when people recommend places to go. Queensland over Dec - Jan should be really cool. Hit Melbourne too?

Internet poker wise. I wasn't planning on taking the laptop due to i'll be staying in backpacker's dorms and i've heard pretty much only bad things about getting items stole. If i can find out how much it would be to get online through my mobile phone though and it looks like it would be worthwhile for me to use it to play online. I'll google that in a second. Each place i stay though say they offer free internet accesss, i'm guessing that's on 1 - 2 main computers in a shared room between the whole hostel though.

Internet Poker seems like my only option at the moment. If it doesn't come off i'll go for bar work i think. With all this unplanned moving around now though internet poker would be ideal.

I know the Aussie Million is going on when i'm there, the buy in to that though seems pretty huge last time i checked though:

. The “Aussie Millions” two-day main event (January 11 & 12) has a buy-in of $10 000, and play will continue until the last man, or woman, stands.

Doubt i'll have that in spare cash while i'm living on a backpackers wage.

Ok, thanks again for the reply.

Anything else i should visit/do while in australia?
