There is a big story in Canada now about the citizen recently freed from a Syrian jail. If your not familiar with the story read:

Toronto Globe and Mail story (http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20031104.warar1104_2/BNStory/National/)

The more interesting thing is his direct statement:

This could possibly give us some insight into the lawyerless Geneva-conventionless process being used now.

As someone who wholeheartedly supports the war on terrorism and Islamo-fascism, I am deeply troubled by accounts like this.

In a civilized society, one of the mechanisms we use to ensure we are catching the true bad guys are the constitutional guarantees for open and fair trials and treatment of all suspects.

If this individual is innocent, he deserves some form of recompense. If he is indeed connected to a terrorist group, the authorities have served only to create doubt in their own case.

Either way it's a travesty of justice.

The original statement by Arar (linked in above post) is really worth reading if you missed it. It's behind the scenes report seems genuine to me, also I heard him live on CBC and he again seemed honest.
