Online Holdem(5/10), 6player table, there is normally no preflop raising going on...i am in middle position and get JJ. of course, i raise and i get reraised by the sb, 1 player calls, so do i! the flop is 6 /images/graemlins/club.gif 10 /images/graemlins/club.gifK /images/graemlins/diamond.gif, sb bets, gets called and i raise him( to find out, how strong he really is) he reraises, the other player folds and i call.
4th street is a rag, he bets, i call.
river, how sweet it is, another J shows up, he bets, raise, he makes the 3 bet and i cap!
he shows K /images/graemlins/club.gifQ /images/graemlins/club.gif so i win a very nice pot....and now he starts calling me a fish, a loser and so on, that i play it very crappy...well, what do u guys think? did i really play it that wrong

You raise to find out how strong he is. He responds by putting as much money in the pot as the rules allow. You continue to call him down. You have paid for information, then chosen to ignore it. I'd have to agree that you played badly.

His 3-bet on the river was also bad.

well, i got the info that he is strong...that could mean that he is on a good draw(flush or straight) and is only trying to push me out, but when i am in that far i wont fold my JJ when i am not absolutly sure hes got me beat. by the way, he was bluffing on bigger pots very often...

Why raise the flop then?

Hey Wyatt, how's the casino running? /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well, wouldn't call you a fish in the first line, but you got very lucky on the river, by hitting a two outer. I wouldn't do this play to often.
May be you can do this play, if someone's always raising. But compare your outs to your opponent (although he doesnt need them, as he has you beat until the river). I don't know what kind of Jacks you held, but imagine a J /images/graemlins/club.gif on the river and you pay him off bigtime. I have to agree, that you have the info on the flop, by raising, but it doesnt seem to have any affect on you, that he 3bets. Be happy that you were lucky and that your opponent has another bad beat story, but for the future keep cool, sometimes you got to send even a big pair to the muck. This play costs you money in the long run.

well, i raised the sb to see, whether he's got something for sure...when he reraised me i thought him being on a draw, i just didnt want to fold my JJ like that, hell knows why!
the longer i think about it, the more i can see that i actually played it bad.... /images/graemlins/crazy.gif /images/graemlins/confused.gif

The strongest weapon of a pokerplayer: the fold!
yeah, u r right, but u know how it is to actually have a good starting hand....it's very hard to throw it away...i just didnt want to believe him having that K!

True enough. I know very well, how hard it is, to wait patiently for a strong starter and then have to muck it. But honestly, this ability (to fold a strong hand under certain circumstances) separates the good players from the bad, right?

True enough....but hey Doc...u always got to consider my "GV" /images/graemlins/grin.gif
I know i got lots to learn, but i think i am doing quite well....i increased my stack from 28$ to 384$....in about 2 hours, i hope it keeps going like that...

A poker drama with internal monologue...

You: "i raise him( to find out, how strong he really is)"

Let's look at the evidence, shall we?

Him (preflop): reraised
Him (flop): 3 bet
Him (turn): bet

Your final action preflop: call
Your final action on the flop: call
Your final action on the turn: call

You had a question and tried to find out the answer. You got it. You ignored it. So either a) don't bother to try and get information, b/c you ignore it anyways, or b) rejoice in hitting your two outer and move on. I think you played it badly- just plain old hope and imagination that somehow you still had the best hand and talked yourself into calling when drawing superslim. And clearly you didn't even have much confidence in your holding on later streets b/c you went into calling station mode.

He certainly overplayed his hand on the river.

Leon

I agree with everyone who said, "you raised to get information and then ignored it." You have the knowledge, but you didn't follow through with the fold. The raise on the flop was good, but the rest looks fish, smells fishy, and 44 out of 46 hands, will float like a dead fishy.

I hope you won't think me a nitpicker, but I disagree. It might separate the great player from the good player, but there are far more important and basic skills which separate the good player from the bad one. Hand selection comes to mind.
