Total newbie question. Try not to laugh at me:)

I don't have much experience in casinos, the closest one I can play in right now is about 4 hours away.

Anyway, what the heck is a comp, or getting comped? Does it stand for complimentary? I assume it's a kickback from the casino. I understand that comps can be different from casino to casino, but what are some examples of comps? How can you get them?

Does it stand for complimentary?

Yes.

I assume it's a kickback from the casino.

Correct.

I understand that comps can be different from casino to casino, but what are some examples of comps?

Random examples:

- Play blackjack for a few hours and ask the pit boss for a comp (EX: last time I was in AC I played blackjack for 2-3 hrs and received a $10 comp towards the snack bar)

- Play poker for a few hours and receive the poker room rate (EX: at Borgata, if you play >=4 hrs, you can get a hotel room for $100, instead of the normal price)

- Play poker for a few hours and receive a comp (EX: At the Monte Carlo in LV, if you play poker for >=4 hrs, you get a $6 comp)

- Play VP/slots and get a cashback bonus, usually around .3% (I think, could be wrong) of your total wager

Casinos also send out comp mailings to customers who have played there in the past (specific value of comp depends on how often you play there and how much you wager). For example, about once every 2-3 weeks I receive a letter from the California (LV) offering me a free 5-day/4-night stay. Also, this week I received a flyer good for a free night at the Borgata (AC).
