View Full Version : 2nd question on structured versus spread limits

Would you (or anyone else here) say that it could get a lot more expensive playing the 1-4-4-8 spread limit game versus the 5-10 structured limit game? In other words, would a larger bankroll be needed for 1-4-4-8 game. ??

Also, if a player were to have played 5-10 for quite some time, would there be any drastic adjustments needed to switch to a 1-4-4-8 game? Strategy, etc.

Practicing here a lot on 3-6 , 5-10, etc games and need to know what to expect when going into a 1-4-4-8 type game.

The big difference, some could say 'advantage', with spread limit games is that it offers high implied odds when you are able to limp in with speculative hands for $2. If your hand hits then you can punish with a big $8 bet on the turn and river.

The difficult part to me is keeping track of the $$ in the pot as it's not quite as easy as in a structured game. In a 1-4-8-8 I've seen player's bet $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, ... something a structured game player isn't used to seeing. Instead of counting bets you end up counting $$ and that takes a little more concentration on the game.

Overall though, I would think that a $5-10 bankroll would be more than sufficient to fund a 1-4-8-8 game.

I lost my first answer in cyberland, here goes again. 1488 is cheaper than 5-10 because of the small blinds (1-2 instead of 2-4 in a regular 4-8) Some Las Vegas casinos have structured 4-8 with 1-2 blinds. Similar deal. Sometimes in 1488 players bet less than the max. Don't do this, but take your occasional half price card with glee. Mostly though, the game is cheaper because of the blinds. You need to steal raise less and sometimes limping and folding to a raise behind you is a viable option where it wouldn't be in a game with full blinds. Read TOP on game structure some more too. Read some of the writing on how hold'em strategy has changed as the blinds got more expensive. This will help you in all games. You can limp with some hands you shouldn't limp with in other games, even though you would think you have to play tighter.
