Fleer will be releasing a complete card set of all major league Jewish ballplayers. Anyone wishing to buy the set must make a one hundred dollar contribution to the American Jewish Museum, which has sponsored the release. An interesting footnote in the story in the Boston Globe concerned a former Red Sox pitcher who lasted for a couple years, and after he retired, converted to Judaism.

When the rabbi asked him if he would like to choose a Jewish name, he replied, "Sure. Sandy Koufax."

Seems like a worthy cause.

According to Bill James, circa 1950, Jewish ballplayers were commonly given the nickname "Moe"

Also, the Dodgers got a lot of flack for their promo hyping the Shawn Green acquisition "Don't be a Schmuck!...etc."
