View Full Version : Unusually High Rake?

Hi, first time poster here, I'm relatively new to the game.

I went to Turning Stone Casino in upstate NY today, and since the $25 holdem tourney was cancelled in favor of a 500 + 40 one, I decided to just play at the tables instead.
At the 2/4 table, the rake was $3 on every pot over $10. to me that seemed really high. I've been to foxwoods once, and it wasn't nearly that high (if I remember correctly), and online its much much less (granted, nowhere near the overhead online). I recall B&M rakes being something along the lines of $2 out of $20 or something, not 3 out of any pot more than 10. In retrospect, the average rake must have been something like 10-15%, where I thought typical B&M rakes were around 5-7%. Am I wrong, or this a ripoff of a card room?

Another quick question: they had 1/3 tables also, what is that? I haven't seen that in a casino before. Is that fixed limit with 3 on the turn and river?

Thanks for the help,

Jon

3 out of Ten seems nice compared to some places I've seen but I agree it seems high. My local haunt is 10% up to $3 with another dollar going to Jackpot. Also no flop no drop which is real nice. It makes it very wrong to open limp in late position.

Stil not bad, Commerce drops All the blinds in a 3-6 ($4) flop or not.

I was in shock the first time I played at Commerce. I'm on a 4/8 table Raise from LP to take the blinds, and I win 1 white check. They rake it even if the blinds chop.

Since poker is a war for the blinds or ante's how can they get away with such a large rake? There is nothing to play for.

Mason also has a nice essay in Poker Essays 3 talking about the SoCal rake and the use of Props.

I too was in shock about the Commerce rake...blind stealing is a big part of any game, and the rake structure makes this impossible. Also, they only sit 9 players to a table, which makes the blinds come around that much more quickly, and makes blind stealing that much more important. It is difficult to overcome the rake in a lot of games, but here, I am wondering if anyone is able to overcome this rake at low limits.

You can overcome it only because the play is so bad. Most hands are family pots, all the way to the river. If people start to play close to correct you have to move up.

The 1-3 table at Turning Stone is hold em' where you canbet $1 or up to $3 on every round. It's a messy game which is taking a lot of the fish away from $3-6. It blows
