Zito's 86 MPH fastball did him in. He ran out of gas pitching on 3 days rest.

Once again, Oakland ran the bases poorly, having a runner thrown out at third and at second. Once again, they couldn't come through with men on base, looking at 2 called third strikes in the 9th inning.

Perhaps Macha would have been better served by letting righties hit against Lowe. One would think that Long would have been looking for the same pitch that the previous hitter took for a called third strike. Oh well.

Nine straight losses when a win would have closed out the series. Ouch! The A's were up 2-0 in 2001, 2-1 in 2002 and 2-0 again in 2003. Maybe they should consider losing the first two games next year.

...and at second...

Yeah where was Fox's coverage of the play?? We had 2 hours while they performed surgery in CF, we could get one replay of what the hell Jerome Bleeping Dye was doing on the base path during the play you would think?

Either that or some footage of those punkass college kids getting strangled by security.

Boston showed no class in their win. Manny stopped to admire his home run and then Derek Lowe gave the finger to the Oakland bench after the win. Talk about a poor winner.

Boo hoo boris, .. haha, how sad. the oakland fans were real classy regarding the damon situation too.

The Oakland Athletics. The new kings of choke.

Did Lowe really give the finger? I didn't see that.

As for Manny, I loved it!! It was either a fly out or a HR, so bet it!

Manny stopped to admire his home run

I don't understand why everyone has a problem with this.

Derek Lowe gave the finger to the Oakland bench after the win.

Was this televised? I did not see it. If so, it was in bad taste.

Lowe's Celebration Offends A's Players (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2003/news/story?id=1632259)

I love it when players on the opposing team stop to admire their home runs.

The Yankees won a World Series game from the Mets when both the batter and the baserunner stopped to admire a home run that was not a home run.

Manny not only stopped, but he then pointed to the Sox dugout indicating "one." I assume he meant he finally got one hit when they needed one. Perhaps he meant that it was the first home run he has ever hit. It seems Manny forgets things, such as that he owes the Red Sox 100% instead of wondering what it would be like to play for the Yankees.

Great hitter, immature man.

It was either a fly out, a home run, or, given the fact that Manny had walked about three feet when the ball got to it's destination, a long single. Manny must think most left fielders play like he does, and thus the ball, if it doesn't go over the fence, might be dropped or otherwise misplayed. If only he would keep his eye on the ball that way when it's hit to him.

"The A's thought Lowe simulated a sexual act with his arms and made a gesture toward his crotch following the final out, sending Oakland shortstop Miguel Tejada into a rage in the clubhouse moments later.

'Derek Lowe is going to be paid back for that sign,' Tejada screamed hysterically through the clubhouse, shouting expletives. 'My kid is in the stands. He's going to pay.'

Oakland general manager Billy Beane escorted the crying Tejada away."

Tejada is loading with class too.

Anyway, if he had just run, rather than stop to debate between third and home, Oakland would be resting comfortably in New York today, preparing to play the Yankees.

two fans were jerks. The rest of the 40,000+ gave him an ovation as he was loaded into the ambulance.

I find Tejada's statements especially ironic since he won't even be an Oakland A next year. I'm sure he'll enjoy watching Lowe get 'paid back' on his TV though.

Or a 7-3 put out when he forgot to start running if the ball fell in.

Why doesn't Tejada shut the fu@k up, it's a little late to complain when you only get 2 meaningless hits in 5 games.

Hey, if you're allowed to lie about Lowe giving the finger to the Oakland bench, he should be able to lie about how many Oakland fans were cheering Damon's injury, right?

David Steele

The whole thing is a show of poor sportsmanship at
the end. They should all line up and shake each others
hands as any little-leaguers know how to do.

Hockey does it well at the end of a series, in the NFL they are quite sporting at the end of many regular season games.

i believe his official name is Bucky F. Dent.

Uston

Well, that's the whole point. If you were Tejada, what would you rather talk about: Lowe being disrespectful, or the fact that you were horrible in the postseason for the third straight year while your team tanked yet again?

Boris
10-07-2003, 12:05 PM
the article said obscene gesture which I assumed was the bird. The A's choked again but they never talked smack about anybody and never tried to show anybody up. Boston can cheer for now but they will be moaning about the curse of the Bambino five games from now anyways.

andyfox

Great idea. If hockey players can do it, after (generally) coming to blows during the contest, certainly baseball players can do it, as they all learned to do it in little league. It would be a touch of class that is missing now, to say the least.

daryn

nobody in Boston believes in curses /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I watched Lowe give his gesture specifically to the A's dugout. He grabbed his crotch and definitely turned towards the A's dugout to do it. It was completely out of character for him to pull such a stunt.

I normally not an apologist, but I think there was something else there. A lot of smack talk going on between the teams. I guessing there was a little history between Lowe and the A's after Game 1. I'm guessing the A's gave it to him as they were running off the field or during the 12th inning of Game 1.

Just my thoughts because he hasn't showed that kind of fire or emotion in his entire career in Boston.

It's the national media that pumps up that crap.

Oh and as for Tejada, what about the, "Mother-fer" clear as day, top of his lungs repeated yell from him when he struck out for the billionth time? You don't think any kids in the stands heard it? Never mind the national TV mic picked it up.

I think there was something else there. A lot of smack talk going on between the teams.

Supposedly, Billy Beane has stated that Lowe wouldn't be one of the three or four best pitchers on the Athletics (a true, albeit bushleague comment) and Oakland's pitching coach predicted that Lowe would blow out his arm if he didn't change his mechanics.

I think he just wanted to make Tejada cry.
