View Full Version : 7 Card Stud book recommendations?

I've already purchased 7 Card Stud for Advanced Players, but I would like to get something more basic.

Specifically, I'm looking for a book that will tell me what hands I should be playing early, general overviews of play on each street, and what are common situations of which I should be aware.

The 7CSFAP assumes I already know these things, but I just have a general seat of my pants knowledge. And once I do gain this knowledge I'm sure 7CSFAP will be invaluable.

I am considering

Seven-Card Stud -- The Complete Course in Winning at Medium and Lower limits by Roy West.

and/or

Seven Card Stud Poker by Konstantin Othmer.

Has anyone read either of these books, or does anyone have a better recommendation?

The Winner's Guide to Casino Poker by edwin silberstang has a good primer section on seven card stud.

West's book is perfect for players learning Stud at the 1-5 and 5-10 limits.

I agree. I thought West's book was a great low-mid limit book.

"great low-mid limit book"

mid-limit stud is very different from low limit stud. West's book, which I agree is pretty good for someone new to stud and starting at the low limits is not aimed towards the mid-limits which would be $15-$30 and higher.

West' book is the best and Othmer' one is worth.

Great (even if is an old book) is the 7 card section in Super System by Doyle Brunson.

Good point. I was thinking less than $15-30 for mid limit.

Both of those books are Ok. West says his book applies at 10-20 but I find his advice way too restrictive at 10-20. You need to be more aggressive than he proposes to beat good players. But at 5-10 and below his advice is good against most players. but there are good players at 5-10 who you need to play differently against tahn he proposes.

read West and 7CSFAp and after you have digested them, then read othmers book. Othmer will be less helpful to a beginner than a player with a broader knowledge base already.
