View Full Version : PLO8 (Party $50) : big raise pre-flop - little idea what I'm doing

OK, so I bought Ray Zee's book and Ciaffone's book. And I started reading them. But that's not nearly as much fun as playing. I feel like I have at least a reasonable grasp of what to do post-flop. I also feel like I have a reasonable grasp of what kind of hands to see the flop with. Where I'm completely clueless (as opposed to just generally clueless) is knowing which hands are really worth a raise pre-flop. Which brings us to the hand at question.

PartyPoker $50 buy-in PLO8. I'm pretty new at the table (one round played) and have no line on anyone's play. I have built my stack to a whopping $50.25.

I'm dealt [ Ah, 2c, 3h, Ad ] on the button.

EP calls $1. Fold, Fold, MP1 calls $1. MP2 ($102) raises to $5.50. LP ($59) calls $5.50. I raise to $25.50. Folded to MP2 who calls. LP calls.

That's really it as far as my question. Was this raise good, OK, bad or idiotic?

As for the rest of the hand....

** Dealing Flop ** : [ 7s, 4c, 5h ]

MP2 (initial raiser) goes all-in, LP folds, I call.

there is absolutely no reason not to make this reraise. while you do have the best hand in PLO8 (though it is not double suited), it is not one that particularly likes volume pots. this hand plays much better in shorthanded pots where the aces are more likely to hold up for high, allowing you to scoop or 3/4 an enemy. frankly i would make this reraise on any AA2x unless MP2 has shown that he will not raise pot without an AA2x of his own, and even then it is close because of the third player's dead money.

please tell me the guy didn't turn over A274, backdoor a flush, or something like that.

i'd like to see more PLO8 discussion here. it's a remarkably underplayed game considering how profitable it is for the good player.

textbook. Not much you can ask for, other than making aces full with no low on board.

Two words for you, my friend: Palace, and Wednesday.

As for the hand, I think you played it fine. If he has A236 you're not really loving life but in general you'll scoop or 3/4 here a good deal of the time.

Some scenarios...

50% equity vs. two pair + nut low:
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
Omaha Hi/Low 8-or-better: 820 enumerated boards containing 7s 4c 5h
cards scoop HIwin HIlos HItie LOwin LOlos LOtie EV
2c Ad Ah 3h 99 312 422 86 108 0 712 0.499
As 2s 7d 4h 0 422 312 86 0 108 712 0.501
</pre><hr />

This is tragic but unlikely:
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
Omaha Hi/Low 8-or-better: 820 enumerated boards containing 7s 4c 5h
cards scoop HIwin HIlos HItie LOwin LOlos LOtie EV
2c Ad Ah 3h 0 63 757 0 0 0 820 0.288
As 2s 3c 6d 0 757 63 0 0 0 820 0.712
</pre><hr />

Anything else and you're in good shape:

As 2s Kc Kd 0 92 631 97 0 108 712 0.303
</pre><hr />

As 2s Ac 4d 0 96 223 501 0 73 747 0.439
</pre><hr />

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>

Thanks for the responses. I guess this was pretty basic.

My opponent had [ As 9h 4s 2h ] and the turn and river didn't change anything, so I quartered him.

Question: Pre-flop, should my opponent fold to my raise?

Thanks for the advice re: this hand. And what a pal - thanks for the invite! You're obviously terrified of having me in your game, yet still willing to have me there!

Seriously, can't make this Wed., but probably next week. Sure would be nice to get a PLO game spread at LC (perhaps a chance) or AJs (this would never happen), though.

if i know it's you who raised me $20, i fold. if it's a typical party opponent who may not even have AA or A2 to make this reraise, i probably call it. i would still much rather change that 9 to any card 6 or lower, in which case i may even call the bet from you.
